Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #3

I am not sure their are still two hyena's as only half of the indoor area seemed to have bedding in. The prarie dog enclosure would probably not be suitable for a mongoose.

In my my previous post I meant variegated spider monkey.

I think at the time it would have been a case of getting something carnivorous which would hopefully be of interest to the visitors after this enclosure was vacated by the Asian lions, which as we know, were supposed to return in the new Asian carnivore exhibit which did not materialise.
When the Lions first left,it was suggested my somebody that is no longer at the zoo, that they would convert it to a lemur walk through exhibit, that would have NO member of staff in it while it was open!

There is a part of the house that visitors cannot see, that was used as the cubbing den for the female Lions,it is in that part of the House that the other female is being kept!

I have made a list of the bird species kept in the tropical house:
-red shoveler
-red crested turaco
-ringed teal
-southern lapwing
-sunbitten
If any one knew the numbers of each species I would love to find out, and if anybody had any idea of what species of birds could added, take in to account they are free flying with the public, there is also a sloth, marmosets but no bats anymore. Any suggestions..

I have just messaged the zoo asking why the elephants don't use the grass paddock anymore, and they replied telling me that 'we are doing major improvements to the field and gates and that we should see them in there more often!'

I don't email them to them tpw123, I message there facebook, it's the easiest way to get quick answers! ;) You have to like there page first to message to them.
Which means you get a reply from the PR department and not from animal mangement,so you get the answer that they think you want to here and not what is always the truth!

Yes but from my friends experience the pr group run the emails as well. I am sure would consult with appropriate staff before giving answers.

You would like to think so wouldn't you! But they are no different to most zoo's in that the pr department is a law to themselves, and will often say anything that will get, them good publicity!I know as I have seen it operation before my own eyes at Twycross, despite the fact that myself and a keeper were telling them that the info they were saying was wrong,to which we were told yes but if we told them the truth it wouldn't be what they wanted to hear!!!!

Ha ha! That's really bad. I'm sure the email is run by PR to though. Best to ask the keepers directly!

It certainly was under the previous director,I can only hope that things have now changed, and they do actually ask the proper staff before they reply, but from what I have heard over the last few weeks, nothing has changed and Twycross is still in as much trouble as it was under the previous mangement!!!

I guess they are things you shouldn't declare on zoochat!

Do any zoos actually go to those lengths? I've read stuff on other facebook pages that lead me to believe it's just the party line and the respondant doesn't really know the animals concerned.

I agree with Mr. Zoo giraffe, they only tell you what they want you to know and what they think you will like to hear, eg, inform you that the baby Brazilian tapir is doing well, true, but there was no mention of its parents dying, they will inform you on facebook when an elderly chimp has passed on, they do not mention the death of a chimp that was not that old, they informed us that the two female giraffes had been sent to Blair Drummond, they never mentioned what happened to Justin the male previously.

Or, if memory serves me correctly, what happened to his predecessor, another young male 'Zoolu' who was born at Paignton....

Mind you, this sort of thing- giving out just the good or positive news, only noting the deaths of elderly favourites and drawing a veil of silence over other negative events,, is common practice in most zoos to varying extent.

You have hit the nail on the head,99% of the time its the party line with any zoo.

Justin broke his neck in the rails in the Giraffe house, very upsetting and the second such accident. Put his head through to feed and slipped, twisted, who knows other than he had died. Was that not made public?
