Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #5

According to someone on the Twycross Zoo facebook page, Kibriah the orang has given birth. Can anyone confirm this?

Well it seems likely to be true, she was pregnant and has looked ready to give birth for about 2 months although she was due in December according to the staff.

Considering the awful state most Guenon species are in currently, in terms of captive populations, this is a nice bit of news.

Pardon me for querying this, but didn't Twycross initially obtain 1.2 from Port Lympne? Later a baby( 'the sister') was born at Twycross. The writeup says the new baby will join a familiy unit of 'mum, dad and older sister Afia'- no mention of a second adult female. Is it still there?

It sounds as if they plan to introduce father 'Batu' to them shortly. Some Bornean males can be dangerous to the infants under those circumstances but I think 'Batu' has proven himself pretty gentle in this respect.

He seems to really enjoy the interaction with the kids and is very patient when being bashed over the head repeatedly.

I went last Sunday and they were all together again, seemingly peacefully. Kibriah was sensibly keeping out of Batu's way but he was totally relaxed doing his orange rug impression!

I think its partly due to Batu's very laid-back nature, plus they are all in very close visual/touch contact even when split, so its no big deal when they are put back together again.

Visited the zoo today noticed a few things.

The camels have gone. The male died and the female went to another zoo. They are planning to turn this into an enclosure for a new species.

Unfortunately only one bush dog baby survived.

They have knocked down the wall between the mara and vicuña and changed it into one large paddock. Therefore it is now from left to right along the back end of the zoo. A small paddock for mara I only saw one. A large paddock for vicuña with a small fenced off area for two mara which had no indoor acces. An empty enclosure. A large paddock and a smaller paddock which I think animals could go between for kangaroos and emu. An enclosure for otters etc etc.

Saw the baby orangutan and de Brazza monkey. The baby orang and its mum were separated from the rest of the family

The animal I would rate as just about the least interesting species any Zoo can exhibit.:( Any indication what they plan for this enclosure now?

No however they have let the grass grow. Probably an ungulate although I am hoping for a big cat possibly lion. It may even be used as a monkey house but I think that's unlikely.

To be fair, if a UK zoo displayed Dromedaries I *would* find that interesting :p
