What is the administrative structure of Twycross these days? Just wondering if its trading figures are in the public domain, as at Chester (for example).

Off topic (where Jane and Animal Friendly ae concerned at least) but did anyone else see the ITV documentarry about babies and if so did they notice thw Twycross leopard enclosure? :p

Regarding to the dirty penguin pool that Jane Doe describes. It has recently been cleaned to pristine clear waters, and you can see those pictures on Facebook. I think the comments about the grass being long are also unfair. So what if grass is long. It provides good enrichment and looks so much better that normal mowed look. Twycross is very slowly going into the 21st century, but talks of certain members on here wanting to return to the zoo's "former glory" are really irrelevant and unrealistic.

Certainly agree with this.

Dear Jane Doe and Animal Friendly,

May I politely ask if you could provide us with a list of aspects of Twycross Zoo in 2014 that you think are good or have improved from the times you fondly remember.

Regards,
Ben.

That is easy, absolutely nothing, look at trip advisor to see what those who are important think, ie the general zoo visitor who turns up with their hard earned cash expecting a good day out and leave very much disappointed, they are the ones whose opinions count for the future survival of the zoo, not precocious kids who should be concentrating on their homework.

Intrigued as to whom you are aiming that barbed comment at :p

But is all very well to slag South Lakes off time after time, that is just jolly good fun of coarse!
there isn't really a comparison to be made there. That's like saying people shoot rabbits so it is fine to shoot red squirrels as well.

South Lakes is a slow-motion car crash being driven by a clown with a God Complex, who openly displays his ignorance and lack of social skills in his dealings with both public and media alike.

Twycross is a basically good zoo which was unfortunately held in a sort of time warp by the original owners while other zoos moved forward and upward, and then was further hampered by bad managerial and financial decisions by the next operators. As I see it they are doing their best to drag the zoo forward and while they are obviously still making mistakes all you can do is harp on about "the good old days". If there isn't something to complain about then you bring up whatever you have already complained about ad nauseum, e.g. the anniversary date.

Your last post says it all really, when asked what you think is good about Twycross replying with "absolutely nothing". Why didn't you just make one post saying that and spare everyone else the whinging? And if your opinion of Zoochatters is "precocious kids who should be concentrating on their homework" then what are you even doing here still?

I have no intention of using my previous nome de plume thank you, perhaps in your capacity as moderator you can arrange for me to have only my present title in use, others have changed their user names on zoochat, one member in particular who I have the upmost respect for has also done this, although that is different as he is not bullied and ridiculed on here as myself and another respected, truthfull Twycross commentator have been by the powers that be on here, I am now Animal Friendly, my title states what I actually am, regards to you all.

I'd just like to point out that changing your name won't stop bullying- if any is even going on at all!-, especially if you admit to having created a new account with a new name.;)

Also, if I remember correctly, didn't you vow to never return to this site?

What am I still doing here?, well I will tell you and anyone else with sense who is prepared to take note, firstly I have a great interest in the animals that live at this zoo, this ranges from the guinea pigs to the Asian elephants, I am also very fond of several of the great apes that live at Twycross, Benji the chimp, Asante the gorilla etc. I also have a great loyalty to people who I am/was fond of, in the case of Twycross I was very fond of Molly Badham and in my opinion everything that she stood by regarding the husbandry of the animals that were in the zoo under her direction has been somewhat been neglected since her demise, this also goes for the strong financial control of this zoo under her co director Miss Evans, this zoo was made skint under the direction of Mrs. Boardman. The present CEO, who was Director of Life Sciences under Mrs. Boardman's direction went on television criticising Molly Badham for doing the Pg Tips work years ago, it is nearly two years now since Mrs. Boardman left, what improvements have been made since, although I fully appreciate that the zoo is far from in a good financial state, however they don't exactly help themselves by not having the train running in Spring week, and now charging a decreasing number of visitors two pounds for a plastic carrier bag, I must apologise if what I post on here is not to the liking of everyone, however I do think there is more to this discussion group than simply praising members who have been fortunate to visit places overseas

Thank you for your comment and informing me that bullying from yourself and others will not stop, these comments have been well and truly noted.

One, despite its financial state I'm glad the zoo is taking a conservational stand by no longer using plastic bags. It shows they care more about good morals and the environment than simply doing the cheapest option.

Two, while I haven't read much of this discussion, I'm sure no one is simply praising members who have visited places overseas. This is clearly an obvious attack against Chlidonias, who has had the fortune of visiting overseas on multiple occasions (which I hate him for:p;)), and is not something that should be tolerated on this site. Also, remember how you said you changed your name because of bullying? Well you're kind of playing the bully here.

How have I bullied you in the past? This is possibly the very first time we've talked under any of your accounts!

Also, making a simply observation does not equal bullying. It only would be if I continued to make fun of you for it.

well, in point of fact, I live "overseas", so I don't care if it was directed at me :D

With regards to "bullying", this is a pretty strong accusation. Debating/arguing points is not bullying. Pointing out that all any given member does is complain about a particular zoo is not bullying. Questioning why they are here is not bullying.

Just because you have a fixation on how a zoo is, in your own estimation, not as good as it was forty years ago does not mean that anybody who disagrees with your view is bullying you.

Twycross Zoo...

Just a quiet observation here. Running a zoo is difficult, expensive and more complicated than a very complicated thing. 'Never judge anyone until you've walked a mile in their shoes'.

Yes the zoo's accounts can be downloaded from the Charities Commission website.

The most recent set of figures are for the year ended 31st December 2012 and are poor (especially if you have a financial background and can appreciate some of the subtleties) as were the accounts for other recent years. One can only assume recent activities at the zoo (selling off catering concessions for short-term cash-flow gain, hiked entrance prices and £2 for a bag that costs pence amongst them) are part of a desperate plan to turn the position around.

The 2013 figures are due for filing in the next few months and, undoubtedly, will make interesting reading.

South Lakes is a slow-motion car crash being driven by a clown with a God Complex

Brilliant! Perfectly distilled.

Twycross is a basically good zoo which was unfortunately held in a sort of time warp by the original owners while other zoos moved forward and upward, and then was further hampered by bad managerial and financial decisions by the next operators. As I see it they are doing their best to drag the zoo forward and [while] they are obviously still making mistakes

Again, pretty much spot on.

To be fair to Jane, that penguin pool had been green for many months and should never have been allowed to get or remain in that state.

On another note (I'm not trying to score points, just genuinely curious) do you know if the Bonobo House, closed since before last Christmas, has re-opened yet?
