Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2014 #2

The new lorikeet walk through exhibit is now open, visitors can feed the birds in a similar arrangement to what was at Edinburgh, as I remember it did not last long.

Woburn have had the same exhibit for ages, I went to it at least 5 years ago and it's still running now.

Bristol have a similar set-up that has been running for about 5 years.

I was at Twycross over the weekend and visited Lorikeet Landing. It's noisy, as can be expected of lorikeets, but seemed to be a crowd-pleaser. My issues with it were that it was full of dead or dying trees, not sure if this is intentional to simply provide branches for roosting, but it looked a bit messy. As the other planting comes in I'm sure it will look better. Also, the exhibit is completely open, so other guests can see the people in Lorikeet Landing walking around. I don't know what it is, but I thought it a bit weird, and maybe some panelling around the bottom of the enclosure would have been better, with the top still open. Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures to better illustrate my point!

Issues aside though, it is a pretty good new enclosure, and feels like another step in the right direction.

I have added some photos to the gallery from a visit a couple of weeks ago that may help? :o

There could be some very good news happening in the next couple of weeks,if it does then I will hold my hands up and say I am was wrong now!!But I will wait and see if and when Twycross announce the news,as its only fair that they get to put it out into the public domain first!

Well given the fact that some people on here will jump on me for being wrong, when it happens I am just holding my hands up,and saying yes I can and will always get things wrong from time to time, because I am not perfect, but I am big enough to hold my hands up when wrong!

A very good quality to have in my opinion.

And besides, it's always fun to have a little tease to get you looking forward to something!:D

Am I reading into this that Twycross are about to announce a re-development of their great ape facilities?

People will read into it whatever they like, as Zoogiraffe says, it is up to us to wait and see if the zoo announces the project. I am sure they will.

I have just enjoyed looking at the recent photos of the animals on Twycross Zoo facebook. I was pleased to see two portraits of the two teenage chimps, Tommy and Danny. The photo of Danny features him bearing his teeth, the teeth that he still has that is, as it is clear from this photo that his canine teeth have been removed, this has also been noticed by other viewers of this photo. Obviously I am unable to state for what reason they have been removed.

I have seen the photo as well and seen what others have said not 100% sure why they have done it either I have my thoughts, but is that what they used to do with chimps on the beaches in Spain ?

Yes it was common practice to remove the canine teeth from chimps used for photography on the beaches of Spain, however Danny is not a rescued chimp, he was born at Twycross, and the last chimp that Miss Badham reared.

True Danny was born at Twycross it is funny it is the upper canines only and when they fight it is those teeth that do the damage.

They used to have a dentist go in so that the animals could have proper treatment and not loose any teeth.

That would have been Peter Cortez, a Harley Street dentist who also specialises in zoo animal work, at London, Monkey World among others.
