Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2015

The studbook 2006 says that Jollie (chimp 12045) is Tommy's mum, though the father is listed as unknown. :)

Who is lorries? Think it might be an autocorrect t thing but can't work it out.

1) That is correct. The male is unknown, hence he is listed as an indeterminate (till F+-testing proves otherwise on the parentage).

2) Unless people are more specific (wish they would ...), they probably meant Charlotte.

I assume only the youngest verus Jollie and Josie will be the planned for "breeders" as realistically all the grand old ladies are all more or less post repro and in part incapable of (Choppers). For group dynamics' sake it is probably not a bad one to include them.

I also presume that further additions in verus from outside will be added after new male Kibali has been properly integrated.

Will be interesting to see if they will attempt to set up a verus only group and leave the others in a family group and those with behavioral issues as "side-steppers".

The plans for the new enclosures show two outdoor Chimpanzee islands so presumably only two groups, though 'misfits' could no doubt be held in offshow/indoor housing.

I guess the pure verus group could also contain mixed race Chimps as well, but with only the verus being allowed to breed, as at Edinburgh. The choices of exactly how they are grouped will depend on compatability, but they do already have the one large group which could form the basis for one of the two exhibits.

Gibbon Forest

I visited about a month ago and they seemed to have quite a bit of work to do on Gibbon Forest - I don't think they had started the housing. Does anyone know of the current progress / any tentative opening dates?

I'm sure I'd read July somewhere but it was obvious a month ago it wasn't going to be ready then.

On the website it just states Summer.

It's a huge footprint for Twycross.

Has anyone attended lately and observed the Amur Leopard cubs and enclosure? Are they still in that horrible ex-chimp enclosure with the strips of log/bark to try and cover the mesh/walls? Any other changes since last August apart from the Giraffes arriving? Im thinking of having a trip over in 2 weeks time and combining it with a day at Twycross and one at West midlands Safari park.

The cubs and mum appear to have swapped with dad again, so have the larger portion of the enclosure. The boy is now as big as mum.

New Male Chimpanzee.

Has anyone visiting Twycross recently seen the new male Western Chimp, or know where he is currently living? Perhaps in the oldest Gorilla House while undergoing quarantine? Animals kept in this house can only be seen when outside nowadays. Any information on his whereabouts welcome.

If the new male is in old gorilla house he is not allowed out side because he is in quarantine were he has to stay for 9 months and by rights he should be completely off show apart from which there are maras out in the run.

Someone has posted a photo of a new Bonobo on TZ's Facebook page :)

As bonobos live as family groups there young are safe as the males help out, unlike apes that live solitary lives like orangs the males have nothing to do with the young so bonobo young are safe

There's a difference between Bornean and Sumatran orangutans in that respect. Sumatran males associate more with females and offspring. One reason suggested is because Tigers live on Sumatra and the male presence provides security. On Borneo(no tigers) male Orangs do not do this.

Sorry to tell you but according to the Orang Utan Foundation both species of Orang utan live solitary lives other than when it comes to breeding then the male will hang around for a short while to make sure there was a successful mating

Either there are scientific differences of opinion over this then, or more recent behavioural studies have shed further light on the issue.

This is a gross oversimplification, even for Bornean orangs. 30 years ago Birute Galdikas observed that female orangs often share the same home range and meet from time to time, that adolescents associate and that adult males wander through the forest, but may sire successive infants with the same female.

I can't help but notice, TZs facebook page nearly always has someone asking about discounts or free entry offers; occasionally on other zoos' pages, but nowhere near as bad as here.

Lesser Spot Nosed Gueneon have left the collection

A travel crate indicates that the Arabian Striped Hyena will also be departing soon

Edit: The zoo also no longer holds Sloth (François langur are in there former enclosure)
