Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2016 #1

Does anybody know the projected opening date for "Gibbon Forest"? The piss-poor website appears to have nothing about it, which shows a flagrant disregard for the way in which marketing works...
 
Latest update was that it should be open before Easter. Sorry I can't be anymore specific
 
"Siamang gibbons loving their new home @TwycrossZoo. Opens next week to visitors!!" On Twitter from Sharon Redrobe on Feb 3rd, which would suggest it might be open now. My guess is the piss-poor website deliberately doesn't shout about it because they intend on making a big fuss about it a bit closer to Easter.

Do we know what will be going into the old Siamang enclosure?
 
It will probably be another Primate species but I would personally knock that old enclosure down.

Does anyone know what the next phase is for Twycross now that Gibbon Forest is near in completion?

I assume they'll start on the 'Chimp Eden' at the top of the zoo. The Gibbon complex took the best part of 12 Months, so I doubt the bigger Chimp project will be open until well in to 2017. I've no idea whether they have any smaller projects planned, I'd be surprised if they haven't.

So how is the species listing (M.F.U) in the new Gibbon Forest for each of the four gibbon species on show: agile, siamang, pileated and northern white-cheekeds?

I see this as the real cornerstone and the watershed to Twycross's rebirth and future aspirations to be a center of excellence for primates and their conservation! :)

Was writing up a document for a project on chimpanzee hierarchy and found something about Jambo and Mongo, the father and son with alopecia living at Twycross. They still alive?

They were very much alive when I visited about a month ago!
 
I went to see the Gibbon Forest today. Probably not a bad thing for the inhabitants, but the inside is not particularly bright, but there are big windows for viewing the four sections. None of them were outside; the staff member I asked said they were free to go out but was probably just too cold for them. To me, it looked as if the hatches were closed all day and really wanted some photos of them in the sun.

Also, the Red Ruff and B&W Ruff Lemurs have swapped places, but the Red's didn't venture out either; the Ring Tails did, but soon went back in when the treats had finished being dished out.
 
I visited yesterday as well. Thought the exhibit was great, a huge improvement. Looked more like something that you'd see at Chester Zoo, rather than Twycross.
Although, to me, it definitely looked like they were all closed inside still.

Another thing that I noticed on my visit; the largest chimp building (between gorillas and elephants) was closed with all the doors and windows to the indoor area closed off. The sign outside said it was to do with improvements coming to the chimpanzee housing. Wonder if this means that work on the new chimp house is imminent?
 
The death of Kip and Jolly is finally confirmed.

Two chimps who died on the same night at a zoo that provided animals for the PG Tips adverts were 'cooked to death' by a faulty heater'

Kip and Jolly died in September but no press release was issued by the zoo, a practice that has been common in the past.
A spokesman for Twycross Zoo, based in Atherstone, Warwickshire, said: 'The pathology reports were inconclusive but did reveal both chimps had age-related heart disease.
'Speculation that a faulty heating system might have played a part in the deaths of these animals is unfounded.
'During regular maintenance checks by the Zoo, parts of the heating system had recently been upgraded.'
