Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2019

I'd be interested to know what Twycross's intentions are for the other Apes in the future also. A couple of years ago plans were unveiled for a new 'Kingdom of the Apes' for all four species, of which the Chimp Eden would be the 'first phase'. As we know, the much-needed Chimp enclosure was developed instead as a stand alone exhibit on a different site. Has planning of the rest been abandoned(or shelved) now? It would seem so.

As far as which Apes need new accomodation next, I would rank both Bonobos and Orangutans before the Gorillas.

The gorillas are a small group with only one breeding female(Ozala) and her two young sons, each of which may leave the zoo as they mature. So unless they add to the group with another/more females of breeding potential, its likely to stay much the same size into the future. (Or might they build for them and then add more?) It is also the most recent of those original 'Twycross- style' ape enclosures. As mentioned above, the extension to the Orangutan house might (unfortunately) mean they go to the back of the queue, at least for now. That leaves the Bonobos, with their sharing problem, as the next in line. Twycross still seem to set store by having the only ones in the UK so may be they will do something to improve the situation for them next? Though with other developments like the Rhinos(?) and Tigers in process I'm not expecting anything soon.

My interest for the present lies in whether the two existing empty Chimpanzee enclosures will be re-used, in another form, or demolished. I would prefer the latter as they are very outdated buildings now.

From what I understand Twycross are being urged by the studbook to renovate their bonobo enclosure - in fact, I believe they won’t be allowed any new animals until they do.
My prediction is it’ll be bonobos first, then gorillas, then orangutans.

Aside: I would think that it may well be there are other interested and accomodating parties who are able to take the second bonobo troupe off Twycross Zoo (given the inadequate housing ... at best). And the studbook holder will not be immune to suggestions of a transfer when accomodation and husbandry at the (new) facility are (and / or will be) significantly improved over those at Twycross's (... which is not something that is insurmountable and difficult to achieve given the current sub optimal bonobo situation com at TWZ).

I think that has been going on for some while now...

I think your order is likely correct, though Orangs I think are more needful of completely new housing before the Gorillas.

Do you happen to know if the last four Chimps that were moved from the 'colony' building have been fully integrated into the main group yet?

They where still separated over the two indoor enclosures yesterday

What other collections in the UK have the facilities to house or would be interested in the second troupe do you think?

Considering their chimpanzee troupe is a retired non-breeding group, Whipsnade could theoretically house bonobos. It would certainly reinvigorate that part of the zoo! Ultimately, however, it depends on those high up in ZSL so it’s probably wishful thinking on my part!

IMO, the only other candidates would Colchester or Chester. Paignton at a push perhaps?

Realistically what are the chances of the second troop being moved? As Twycross actively put out that they are the only UK zoo to hold all 4 of the great apes.

Would be a very interesting addition to Colchester (away from the ABC norm) but would need a new complex building for them although there are some areas I could think of which could be adapted.

Wild Place?

However, I was asking also not just the British isles but mainland Europe too as it is a bonobo EEP! So aside UK any other candidates or parties already vouching for the species with the EEP?

It won't be Chester. Paignton are still under TB restrictions and will (more than likely) be for at least 12 months

PZ would have to go out of Orang or Gorilla first, unless they used half of Monkey Heights (2 whole sections) & adapted the fences?

Maybe not to wishful i rember seeing a ZSL van in the car park at twycross last summer have know idea why it was there was just parked with the other cars could just have been an employee borrowing the van and paying a visit, found it a little strange though to have a ZSL van in another zoos car park not very covert. I'm not an hundred percent sure but think it said Whipsnade on it but didn't see the other side so may well have had London on that side.

Wow! Way to put 2 & 2 together and make 100! They could have been swapping stick insects! If they wanted to be covert they would!

It wouldn’t surprise me if there were visitors from other zoos there every week. Considering the scale and scope of cross-zoo breeding programmes, research programmes and just general knowledge and experience share it would more worrying to not see major zoos talking.
