Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2020

Sad news from Facebook:

With a heavy heart we let you know, that one of our oldest chimpanzees, Rosie, passed away today.
Rosie was born and raised at Twycross Zoo, and at 44 years of age, she was our third oldest chimpanzee. She was diagnosed with a heart condition nearly ten years ago and has been on medication but she recently took a turn for the worse.
The post mortem confirmed her long standing heart condition.

I didn't realise which chimp this was until I saw the photo the Zoo put up. But Rosie was one of the most easily identified of Twycross' chimps, as she had a very pale, unpigmented muzzle, so presented a very distinctive appearance.

In reference to a post on here earlier about Dudley, it’s said it costs Dudley £200,000 a month to run. Twycross has stated it cost them £650,000 min a month to run ( if you go to there site it will appear as a pop up so can’t paste the link ) I think some ones figures are wrong here not sure which the high or the low figure but would think these two collections of similar size would not have such a large gap between them on running costs

Check at Companies House and divide by 12 - that'll give you a ROUGH idea

Purely a guess, but perhaps the significantly larger number of apes at Twycross - a group of animals I would assume are among the most expensive to maintain - will account for much of this disparity.

However, the other point is that your estimate of comparative size is WAY out - in terms of footplan, Dudley Zoo covers roughly 110,000 m² to Twycross' 180,000 m².

All primates are expensive to keep in a northern climate; the bigger and more complicated you go, it must get quite terrifying...

Or Charities Commission in their cases.

J C -a good rule of thumb with figures provided is always treat them with initial scepticism if they're suspiciously round (e.g. £200,000). Andrew's concept is spot on though.

A concept which led to the first officially-reported height of Mt Everest being inflated by a few feet to AVOID a suspiciously-round number :P

Just set up a recurring donation for TZ. Very worrying time for the zoo community and I do hope that TZ come out the other end, in a reasonably good shape. I feel it is in safe hands with Dr Redrobe.

My thoughts to, I can’t think of a better person to be in charge at these worrying times given since here arrival a few years back she has bought the place back from financial difficulties to being able to secure large investment from the banks for development. Financial worries are some thing this place has been used to over the last ten / twenty years and has the plans experience to deal with and am sure come through. I think other places with out this experience will suffer more and hope it doesn’t take closures for the government to react to there plight. Another thing where are the tv show of recent times now ? Secret life of the zoo, animal park and big week at the zoo would think this is there time to run specials to highlight the plight of the zoos they use for rateings and help get there donating a message out to the masses

I completely agree with you JC. When you think where the place was, to where it is now, it is quite staggering really.
That is very true re TV shows - I hadn't thought of that. Secret Life of the Zoo is really popular, so you would think that they would help get the message out.

Big week at the zoo I would think would get on this they could give the cameras to the keepers to do the filming and host from a studio, the shows use the zoos for the animals let’s be honest to joe public they love to see the big five etc and it’s a lot cheeper for the networks to go 50 mile up the road to the zoo than around the world to there natural homes so I really do thinks it’s time for them to give back as for secret life of the zoo they are prob worried how they will film there Christmas special now don’t they do it around this time of year ;)

Dr Redrobe has just tweeted that TZ will not be eligible for government support. Does anyone know why?
The UK Govt. is an absolute ... (I will not print / digit in that wording). Personally, I thought never very highly of the new administration ever since they been voted in (via the backdoor) and the Corona phenomenon has been quite the litmus test for them. It is a sorry and sad state of affairs UK zoos (along with a string of other cultural and educational facilities) are in now.

There may be more to run in this - remember the MP who asked the question in the house was asking specifically with reference to Twycross - he's now been made to look a prize turkey by DEFRA and hopefully the zoo will be able to follow up with him and get some changes requested. Fingers crossed.

The zoo is apparently “too big” which can’t bode well for pretty much every major zoo in the UK. As Twycross is definitely in the middle of the market.

Only zoos with a Rateable Value below £51k can claim the 25k business rates grant, I think Hamerton was said somewhere else to have rateable value of 35k, so anything much bigger than Hamerton would not get a grant. Probably at least 20-30 zoos and even so £25k isn't going to make much difference anyway!

Animal Park had actually been on in the form of repeat episodes at 6:30pm on BBC2 a few weeks ago, its finished now. It is a bit surprising that SLOTZ isn't being shown at the moment as its usually on More4 at teatime but has been absent for some time now!
