Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2020

If the

If the general consensus is that she wouldn't do it or allow it to be done, then the threat to do so to the media and Government, is either brave or fool-hardy, or both...
It didnt work in Neumünster...

Or be allowed to do it? Isn't it the case with EEP-managed species that nowadays a zoo's specimens aren't actually 'owned' by the zoo, or at least not the ones they have received through exchanges?. For example I doubt any of Twycross' Bonobos are owned by them. Whereas the oldest gorillas e.g. Biddy and all those Chimpanzees probably are, having been originally purchased and therefore owned by the Zoo. In which case surely EEP involvement with the collection would prevent at least some of this happening anyway?

I am sure you are right. The disposal of a (large?) part of any zoo's collection is outside its direct control, and may be physically owned by other parties, sometimes even Governments. The dispersal of any collection would be a protracted and complicated process, and its maintenance would have to be funded by someone whilst this happened.
Did the Daily Mail (or anyone else) quiz her on these points..?

It seems not...the reason they give for not rehoming in this scenario is that other zoos aren't currently in a position to build more enclosures,- my point is that in many cases that wouldn't be necessary, as a lot of their stock could be dispersed into existing holdings. But its had the desired effect to an extent in that their Facebook shows supporters giving a fresh round of donations amid horrified comments of 'oh how shocking' etc although however well-meaning, financially this will still probably amount to a drop in the ocean for them. Very few query the reality of this actually happening though..

Had are first visit back today, will give more details later but just a quick one I don’t know what there capacity is but it seamed very busy today if they are running a 1/3 capacity all was ok and was good social distance in general but as I always judge the place on the car park the first three hard core car parks where full and any grass bits alongside and the first eight rows on the forth grass car park at half one this afternoon with another 600 guest due to arrive after are slot. Which gave us much incoragement for there future

I thought the same when I visited there and Colchester, but actually inside it was quite comfortable capacity wise.
I think the one way helps a great deal I know not every one follows it but it does make the place seam comfortable a help with mass gatherings at the key species whilst populating some of the lesser which otherwise most people would miss

Just noticed on Zootierliste that Twycross once had Sumatran orangutans. Does anyone know when this was or where they were in the zoo or what happened to them ?And did the master plan include bringing back Sumatran orangutans ?

Between 1960's-80's, they had a pair, Toby and Trudy that lived adjacent to the Bornean pair, altnating in the outside. Trudie was euthanased due to self injury, and replaced with a 2nd female Djambe. After Toby died, Djambe went to Colchester. Trudy had hybrid offspring fathered by the Bornean male Jod after accidental matings through the mesh. Toby never fathered young.

This was before the indoor Orangutan house was extended, when there were two smaller adjacent indoor enclosures and a public viewing area.

Visited for my first post lockdown on Sunday and had a thoroughly enjoyable return 95% of people where following the rules and the one way worked really well to be fair. The place was a full as it can be now but by following this system I never felt overcrowded and was easy to keep the 2m to be honest given they have the fence running down the middle of the zoo now if they where to keep the one way post corona I wouldn’t mind at all it was quite nice to keep the same company of other guests was we went around the zoo. All the animals where outside except the rhino of course, I don’t think I have seen her outside in over a year now and the sand paddock is now becoming green with weeds, the sone they get another rhino in male or female the better to liven her up a bit. The dik dik are now in there current enclosure and the one along side that used to have leapard tortoise in and the bush dogs are in there current enclosure and the former older chimp enclosure with the Mara moving in with kangaroos I assume this is a way of cheep birth control. The leumer walk through was closed but it was later in the after noon so I may have been open earlier. The tiger enclosure is looking much much better now not so much mud pit now more over grown in some areas you will struggle to see them lucky for us she sat on top of the tunnel glass for the time we where in the area great for us not so much for the social distancing, we’ll who can blame them for wanting to stand under a tiger. All in all a great day if you are going to go for a visit I would recommend the afternoon as by 4 o’clock time there where a lot fewer people there and by 5 we had the place to our selves for the last hour

Have put up some pics of the tiger enclosure now it’s gone green

These looks great. Thank you for sharing! :)

I do hope things are going to be OK at TZ. Very worrying and uncertain times for them and all zoos...

Going by the amount of people there last weekend and there steady bookings I would be quietly confident having seen the place now, I do think deciding factors for them and other zoos wil be government involvement obviously and the weather if we have a mild autumn and winter this will also help keep gate taking up

We had a 'mild winter' last year, and that was the reason we owed so much at Easter this year, and were so behind on building work. The mild winter consisted of rain starting on 21st September and continuing unbroken every single day, (save just 4) until mid-March. October instead of being the normal 'Indian summer' was rain every day. The last thing we need this year is another 'mild' winter...

Ok a ‘dry’ winter then

From Facebook:

"Male Snow Leopard, Suou’s health had deteriorated over the past few weeks and despite veterinary treatment, his health did not improve and the tough decision was made to euthanise him."

Fighting talk from TZ about the "Summer of Survival." Hopefully if they have a good one, they will be able to get through until Easter. Does anyone know how much they have raised in fund raising?
