Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2020

Visited this afternoon, Covid stuff all working well and most of not all following one way systems only new news is that it’s now been made mandatory to wear masks indoors on the exhibits all of them which we didn’t realise before we visited it wasn’t this way three weeks ago when we where there luckily we had some on us

Quite an upsetting Social Media post from TZ this morning, talking about being unsure whether they can survive the winter and that there may be a breaking point coming. I got the impression that with donations and bank loans, they were hopeful of getting through to next season. A bit of a U-turn?

I guess that’s where the “Hope” comes in from before. They hope to have enough to get them through the winter, but it’s not a guarantee.

I wouldn’t read into it to much sounds like a last ditch attempt for bank holiday weekend sales they like many others probably are hopping for a good weekend before winter season starts and it looks like it could be a wash out so ticket sales are probably down waiting to see what the weather does

The video included some archive footage also with the king penguins

Brian blessed has now stepped in to help the zoo narrating there latest help video Brian Blessed OBE joins Twycross Zoo's fight for survival! | Twycross Zoo the statement on the page also says there master plans are only put on hold for the mean time,

Couldn’t get through this without having visions of Prince Vultan flying over the zoo!

Regardless, fingers-crossed for Twycross but don’t go expecting any government help. This current mob couldn’t govern their way out of a paper bag.

Male black rhino due to arrive from Leipzig in the next few weeks according to Leipzig thread.
That’s great news if it happens to be able to revive large breeding mammals at a time the zoo is in an uncertain position will be a massive confidence boost to both the zoo and its visitors along with getting there current rhino to possibly move once in a while and even who know go out side

Completely agree with you JC, this is excellent news for the reasons you say and the bigger picture of the species. Last time I was at TZ, I actually saw Nandi outside! Shocking, but I have photographic evidence to prove it! :D

Well, it's a youngster, male rhino Sudan from Leipzig was born in 2017.

Where they cleaning inside cuz that doesn’t count ;)

Is the plan to eventually breed the pair or to get Nandi active? If its to breed it'll he some time till he's mature

20 year old female and 3 year old male sounds a very unlikely prospect for breeding. Better if they sent Nandi to Chester for mating until the bull is older, provided she is still fertile of course.

I agree or at least swap Nandi for one of their females ie; Zuri or Malindi who have both bred at least twice.
Has Nandi got any relations in Britain or is she genetically very important?

Female Nandi is a mixed Dvur Kralove x Berlin Zoo bloodline: Her sire Jasper is actually still around.

Hi has anyone else noticed the blue portacabins on the right as you go in Quite alot, was just wondering if they were temporary offices or the start of a building phase (which I doubt cause of the current climate ) also spent a lovely couple of hrs today managed to see the male tiger for the first time properly as he’s usually out the back

Hi again spent a while the other wk having a great chat with one of the keepers whilst he was feeding the bush dogs he was explaining the male had died and that they had separated the two males into another enclosure (one of which was is being permanently castrated and the other temporarily on the male pill )and that the female mum and daughters would be moving on to another collection and they would be bringing in another female to be with one of the young males To hopefully start a new collection also chatted about the Amur leopards they still have 4 but the two young sisters cannot be together so one is off show (sorry if I’m writing to much but thought the info was nice to share ) x
