Are the Tufted Deer still held? They were signed, but no-shows (could have been due to the excessive cold though, there were a lot of no-shows)

How many gorillas are there?
If the Tufted deer signage is still up, they will be there. Sometimes unobstrusive when hiding behind the little shed or wherever.

Apart from the four adult gorillas mentioned, female Ozala has two sons in the group, Lope(about 8) and Shufai(4-5). Total six animals.

Thank you both, nice to be able to put some names to faces! The two young gorillas were having a great time on Saturday, was lovely to spend time watching them.

Hopefully the Tufted Deer will put in an appearance someday then, don't think I've ever managed to see them...

First visit on Saturday for well over a year, on a freezing cold day. I've never been a regular at Twycross (visiting maybe once a year or so), but this is probably my new local since moving.

Few questions I probably should have asked before hand, and a few that came up during the visit:

Are the Tufted Deer still held? They were signed, but no-shows (could have been due to the excessive cold though, there were a lot of no-shows)

Same for the Crowned Lemurs, still there, or just hiding from the cold?

What is the name of the silverback gorilla? How many gorillas are there? When I was a regular at London I got to know their troop, and it would be nice to get to know the troop at Twycross better.

Are the Orangutans off-show? Their house seemed to be closed off, and wasn't sure if they were still in residence, or had been moved for some reason?

The Bonobos were being monitored (both groups), and they were being quite vocal and active. I know they've not been in the 'new' house for long, so maybe they're still settling in.

I'm not sure about the Tufted Deer. Crowned Lemurs were there a few months ago, although I didn't see them last week (it was very cold so probably indoors).

As mentioned above, the gorillas are Oumbi (m), Biddy, Asante and Ozala (all female). There are also two young males, Lope (b. 2013) and Shufai (b. 2016), both Ozala's offspring.

Two of the four Orangutans were outdoors when I went last week. I'm unsure why the indoor area is sectioned off - maybe to give Kayan some privacy after her mum Kibriah passed away, but this is just a guess.

There seemed to be lots of monitoring while I was there last week: the gorillas, lemurs, bonobos and a few others.

Oops, sorry I didn't see the other responses before I replied! I have a couple of photos on my profile with names etc on, mostly the gorillas and orangutans.

I’m surprised at how elusive the tufted deer are to other zoochatters! I don’t think I’ve not seen them on any of my visits

Where are the tufted deer? I might have seen them and just not paid much attention to them, deer aren't really my main interest

It's the same for me too. I visit 2-4 times a year and I almost always see the tufted deer. The black-tailed prairie dogs, snow leopards, sumatran tigers and yellow-throated martens however are 4 species that I've hardly ever seen in my many trips to Twycross.

Funny you should say that @GiraffeJack10 as I managed to see those four species on my first visit with ease (however I did have to re-visit the martens four times before they came outside :p ) and caught no sign of the deer

I've just been looking at the plans for the '2030 vision'. I was wondering if anyone else sees it as having 3 outdoor Orangutan enclosures? We know the labelled one must be for orangutans; the one opposite seems too big for a smaller primate and the bonobos/gorillas/chimps are all accounted for elsewhere. Then the next page says the lecture theatre is connected to the adjacent orangutan enclosure.

Does anyone know if the zoo have confirmed how many enclosures/groups there will be for each ape?

I saw it as only two main areas, with that third one being a separate multi-species outdoor area that would allow direct observation of any of the apes from the science centre. Not really how sure feasible that really is given there is no link between the other ape enclosures shown.

Also worth noting though that those images are just artist impressions and the artist could have just got carried away or missed things off. The final plans will most likely be a little different.

Yes that could be it - all that made me think that was it says that the lecture theatre is connected to the adjacent orangutan enclosure. There does look to be a tunnel connecting the smaller area to the larger one near the theatre.

I understand it's an artist impression and could change, but I'm sure the zoo gave them an indication of how many enclosures etc. Anyway, it will be interesting to see when it's all completed!

Indeed. It’s all quite exciting! Looking forward to seeing it all become reality.

Has anyone seen Kayan lately, no one I know has seen her. I was hoping she might be with Maliku and Basuki, like the young female in Rostock who lost her mother when young but it doesn’t seem to be so.

I saw her about 2 weeks ago. She seemed contented, but was on her own. I am not sure if she would be isolated from Batu?

I wonder if they are swapping Maliku and Basuki over - so some of the time they are with Kayan and sometimes with Batu? I haven't seen her since before Kibriah passed away, last few times I've been I've only seen Mal and Basuki.

Thank you, that’s good to hear, hopefully she does at least get to play with Basuki. In the past, aside from his obsession with Kibs, Batu was good with the kids.

No problems! Very sad situation, but I am sure they are doing the best for her. Kibs is much missed!
