Bonobos are moved now to the new (old Chimp enclosure)
Which means that their old digs are up for the grinder?Bonobos are moved now to the new (old Chimp enclosure) They aren't outside just yet. I'm concerned about Kayan, no sign of her the last couple of times I visited after her mum passed away.

I imagine they will have to. She's only 4 years old. But maybe Maliku will step in - her son, Basuki, is just a couple of months older and they will be familiar with each other.Could the keepers have intervened with Kayan? Although, I know that is not that common these days.
It probably won't be necessary. At Rostok, Dinda died when her daughter, Lintang, was 2 years old. They'd always lived in a group with Hsiao-Ning and her daughter, so she stayed with them and the keepers provided bottle feeds and extra care. I can imagine the same thing happening here.Any chance she may go to Monkey World (the European crèche for orphaned orangs) or would she be too old for that?
Very likely scenario. Moving her would have no advantages. It probably won't be necessary. At Rostok, Dinda died when her daughter, Lintang, was 2 years old. I can see them letting her go either given the choice. Seeing as they are about to build the bigger and better enclosure and having sent molly to wingham only two years ago and now losing Kibriah losing a third with in two years / half the group wouldn’t be a good start to there next phase of orangutans at the zooVery likely scenario. VERY, very little space to escape the dominant male. It’s a disgrace these great apes are kept in such confined conditions in 2021 & the sooner they build a new enclosure the better. Hopefully it won’t be long!!
Really? Did he pick on her?I am so glad Kibriah spent her last years separate from Batu. He was horrible to her. Such a sad loss, she was a huge character.
As far as I remember, he was obsessed with her and didn't leave her alone. It culminated in the incident with her new born baby, of course. He was also aggressive with my namesake before her move to Paignton which put her off males and she didn't react well to the advances of Nakal. And her time at PZ was short (not because of Nakal). Not really Batu's fault, he was being a male orangutan and they generally lack finesse. But things could have been handled differently.Really? Did he pick on her?
The zoo has today announced that Noddy the chimpanzee has passed away.![]()

…Paignton need to sort out their outdoor habitats before they even consider more Orangs coming in!@Gigit could Kayen move to Paington Zoo to become Chinta's surrogate Daughter? Paington have experience with Hand-Rearing young Apes. All of the Gorillas arrived when they were around Kayen's age. These were all successfully Hand-Reared and have grown into well and magnificent young Silverbacks. Paington have also got connections with Twycross as both Matadi the Gorilla and your namesake Gigit the Orangutan arrived from Twycross. Kayen would be a welcome addition to Paington's Orangutan Family, firstly she would be a good playmate to Nataliya and secondly she could be a breeding Female in the future.
The gorillas were successfully hand-reared in Stuttgart and were moved to Paignton when they could cope more independently. As you know, orangutans stay with their mothers for about 8 years. At 4, Kayan needs support rather than hand-rearing and she can get this from her familiar extended family and the keepers. In my opinion, Chinta is not the ideal candidate to foster an unknown infant and, as TriUK says, the zoo has more important things to do.@Gigit could Kayen move to Paington Zoo to become Chinta's surrogate Daughter?
