Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2022

Strange how they mention the arrival of a vicugna but not the new snow leopard as I would think the snow leopards are a major draw for visitors. I wonder if the move has fallen through again?
Perhaps or if he has arrived they might save that announcement till they are mixed and can both be seen as they only have the one on show area, could be a good announcement just before Easter is seven weeks :)

Snow leopard has definitely moved the big cat sanctuary have released a video of the actual move but this is typical of twycross they don’t give out much information

Thanks I hadn't seen that video. Hope to see him soon!

Just got back from twycross nice visit cold but sunny, tiger was out pretty much all day sat on top of the tunnel, such a good feature of the exhibit, both rhinos also out today getting on well through the fence between the paddocks Sudan kept rubbing her back through the railings. All three vicuña where also together getting on well, the snow leopard on show was also very active don’t know which it was but was all over the exhibit running around, sniffing and exploring. They seem to behaving a bit of a tech upgrade, there online booking has change, the chip shop now has those McDonald’s style iPad ordering things and the bonobos have a information video playing triggered by a Pir system as you pass the screen, it said twycross has 10% of the bonobos in Europe is that right. The penguin pool was also clean today with a new bit of plant installed around the back of the enclosure I was wondering if this was a filtration equipment as the signage for the green pool had disappeared also.

Sounds positive must admit I’m wanting to go renew my pass at some point but waiting for things to improve … also was the orangs still closed off outside ?

Yes the orangs where still blocked of with the barriers, the sheeting was mostly gone, probably with the wind the other week but you couldn’t get close enough to see inside. On a plus note though Batu was outside for a while today

why they just don’t explain why ? One of my bug bears with twycross is the lack of explanation several people have asked why it has been fenced off etc but no replies it’s ridiculous lol

@Trudie may be there has been a death in the Orangutan Family that the Zoo are trying to conceal

I visited a couple of months back and noted the horrendous mess around the Orangutan building- but no explanation of why they are currently almost invisible.i.e if they don't come outside. Might help if they explained why. Remains a mystery at present.

I asked around Christmas time and was told they were giving them more privacy following Kibriah passing away; they also mentioned that were planning on re-opening it for public access 'soon' - though I don't know when soon is.

The Gruffalo has an opening date of 9th of April The Gruffalo Discovery Land at Twycross Zoo
Does anyone know anything about the real animals that are going to be incorporated into the Gruffalo area? I know that they've said that snakes and owls are planned but I wouldn't be surprised if they move some of the existing owls and the boa constrictor living in the indoor area of the dik-dik enclosure into the new area. Obviously it would be nice to see them in new enclosures but Twycross have a really poor reptile collection and I'd love to see new species represented.

I suspect you’re right on them moving the existing Owl collection into this new area and away from where they are now - same for anything else in that area of the zoo that may fit. I can see them wanting to open up that entire stretch alongside the Rhino paddock to provide better viewing and access, plus eventually a new purpose built Rhino House (a few years off though!).

New species would be good too, but from I remember I don’t think the plans included much new facilities beyond the existing stables and avaries.

It was both, animatronics and animals, so it makes sense for the species to align to the story, along with some more generic nature/discovery trail type stuff.
