Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2022

Recently renewed our passes so went today for the first time in over a yr was pleasantly surprised with the gruffalo area I don’t have young children but it was nice to walk through, the new cafe looks nice, 2 rhinos outside, didn’t see the bushdogs which are a favourite of mine, saw 3 dik diks saw the little bonobo inside their house which we hadn’t seen before I do like their outdoor area and the way it has been decorated looks so much better than bare concrete lol the old enclosure that recently had the Mara and bushdogs had a sign saying work in progress and there was a keeper in there doing the grass so hopefully might not be empty for too long, in all it wasn’t a bad couple of hrs

I’m not quiet sure if they have moved the male on or if they have having more then one male at the zoo but that is unlikely
How many dik diks does the zoo house?
We saw 3 last wk but I wouldn’t know what sex they were

Does anyone remember the old elephant house? It was rather hideous, especially indoors where there were pits with "no feeding" stamped on them? Wherabouts was this in the zoo? What is in its place? I was literally a small child back then, so my memories may be wrong....

It’s the Bonobo/Gorilla/Tortoise house. Gitara & Iris lived there.

Great thanks. I gues they renovated it for the bonobos then?
It was renovated for the Bonobos and for a while 3 young gorillas lived in one half of it also. Bonobos have recently moved to another house, and the area now houses the group of L'Hoest's monkeys.

I remember the old Elephant house. The main building was knocked down but I think the Tortoise indoor and outdoor area stayed in place. The house was still standing on my family visit in September 1990 so I guess it was knocked down that winter.

Sadly there are no old enclosure photos from Twycross in the early 90s on here.

I'm curious to know.... seen as the new Gruffalo section has opened, can someone give me a list of which animals are still around in that section of the zoo and which ones have gone? I've been wanting to know if the donkeys or alpaca are still in the zoo unless they've been moved elsewhere.

The only animals I've seen in the Gruffalo area were the goats, the Great Grey Owl and a snake (Boa Constrictor I think). As far as I'm aware, the donkeys, alpacas and other pets corner animals such as ferrets, rabbits etc are all gone.

I have just noticed the Verreaux's eagle-owl are no longer listed on the Twycross Zoo website. I'm guessing that means they have either moved on or passed away.

I noticed some of the other species have gone from the website including the coatis, Red-bellied lemur, B&W ruffed lemur, Golden-headed lion tamarin, even Prairie dog seem to have gone from the zoo's website. :(

I haven't seen the Red-bellied lemur, B&W ruffed lemur or Golden-headed lion tamarin at Twycross for quite a while. Not sure on the Prairie dogs, last time I went past the enclosure they were still there but I don't go around that half of the zoo very often. They aren't listed on the app anymore either so they must be gone.
