Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2022

I haven't seen the Red-bellied lemur, B&W ruffed lemur or Golden-headed lion tamarin at Twycross for quite a while. Not sure on the Prairie dogs, last time I went past the enclosure they were still there but I don't go around that half of the zoo very often. They aren't listed on the app anymore either so they must be gone.
Wallabies have gone from the website also.

A staff member informed me today when I visited the zoo that the zoo will be getting some red foxes to join the gruffalo land, I never really visited the butterfly house but I noticed some species that I really love in there red crested turaco, nicobar pigeon and Victoria crowned pigeon

They also have a red-crested turaco in the gruffalo land aviary what now houses a hornbill and now them

Just found this article / council document relating the government funds for the zoo https://moderngov.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk/documents/s17453/Levelling Up Fund.pdf the few points I can get from it being the only enclosures covered will be orangutans no mention of the gorillas, and that the money should be spent with in three years, as the document was published five months ago and there currently seams to be no planning requests yet it makes me wonder when something might start to happen

I am also wondering on when building will begin on this.

Could it be the Orang-utan enclosure will be connected to the campus as to why they only mentioned those? I really hope the Gorillas and Bonobos will be getting new enclosures too as part of this plan.

It’s been mentioned by @Pertinax on another thread that Shufai has been castrated. I presume this means the building of a bachelor Gorilla enclosure has been put on the back burner. With Shufai being castrated it makes me question whether Lope has suffered the same fate. If both juveniles have been sterilised could they stay within their Family permanently. @Pertinax can you enlighten me further?

I think the last date quoted for this opening was 2024. I suspect we’ll see a planning application very soon with construction running throughout 2023.

It’s no surprise they only reference Orang-Utan’s as their new exhibit is directly connected to the research centre. I’m confident we’ll still see the other enclosures replaced over the following years.

I agree I would have thought they would have slipped the gorillas enclosure on to the plans also though and let the state pay for it rather than finding another two or three million to build it them selves

From what I remember, didn't they already have quite a bit saved to cover some of the enclosures? Maybe they could only get the funding for things directly connected to the research centre, so they are having to use that money for the research centre and the money they already had saved will go to the other enclosures?

I hope they start work soon; the sooner these enclosures are built the better for both the zoo and the apes. Maybe the gorillas and bonobos are being pushed back so they can get the research centre built before the deadline of them spending it runs out.

There are still quite a few young (and maybe older) males that will need a bachelor enclosure in a few years. I had also originally thought that Lope and Shufai would be part of the bachelor group but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

From what I understand (and this is just going from what people have said on other groups so could be incorrect), Shufai is supposed to be staying with the family group, whereas they are looking to move Lope - so this would suggest he hasn't been castrated.

Lope isn't castrated. If they need to remove him from the natal group before they find a home for him somewhere else, I could imagine him living temporarily in say the old Chimp Colony building or even the original gorilla house(offshow). Depending on his age at the time, Shufai might join him for company. I think the reason Sufai was castrated is they know they don't want to breed from him so its an easier option for the future. Lope was possibly already too old when the decision was made, or he might have met the same fate. With Shufai they have the option of him either staying in the group, or perhaps moving with his brother.

Quick visit on Sunday got in early as by 12 it was queuing down the rd too many people for my liking lol.the chimpanzees were very vocal today and we sat watching the bonobo baby for a while, so cute one thing we noticed was that there work was going on I would say on the indoor housing on a empty enclosure by the tigers (recently had Mara and bushdogs in it ),Also the recently vacated bonobo enclosure had tall scaffolding in it so something happening there potentially. Could the orangs potentially move there ?

The original 2030 vision does show the new Orangutan enclosure opposite the far end of the tiger enclosure so fingers crossed it is the beginning of the new work.

Would the old Bonobo House be suitable for the Lemurs? As they’ll need to move first to make way for the new Science Centre and Orang-Utan enclosure if the concepts prove accurate.

Moving the Orang-Utan into the Bonobo, only to move them again in 18-24 months seems unlikely?

Were the L'Hoest's monkeys still in the old bonobo enclosure? I doubt they'd move the Orangutans into there, it's not that much bigger so doesn't seem worth it if they are starting the new enclosure.

Possibly it could be suitable for the lemurs temporarily. If they are planning on building the Orangutan enclosure where it suggests then they do need to move the lemurs somewhere or send them off to another zoo (which I can't see happening as they are popular with a lot of visitors). Only other place I can think of is if they split off some of the areas in the old monkey houses near the gibbons, or put them at the far end of the zoo where the L'Hoest's used to be.
