Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2022

That is very odd as its one of their major exhibits. Can only think its because they are trying to integrate the small seperate group with the main one. Can't think of any other reason. They don't go outside that much though my last visit I did actually see some of them, about four, using the outdoors.

I have had a reply from Twycross regarding the closure: it is closed due to fighting within the group. They said that 'due to some injuries sustained' the chimps are being given space so they can be cared for by the keepers and vet team.

No mention of any names, but did imply it was a challenge to the dominant male.

Also, does anyone happen to know about the two giraffes at the zoo?

Quick google says 2018 they had Setanta, Brad (both Rothschild's) and Epesi (Reticulated). I know Epesi passed away in 2019, so does anyone know are the two at the zoo still Setanta and Brad?

I believe both males are still there as far as I'm aware. Brad was born Flamingo Land in 2013 and Setanta came from Fota(I think) and was born in 2011

Had a quick visit today chimp Eden is open and in the first enclosure most of the chimps were in that bit with 3 separate on the other side couldn’t tell you which ones though sorry lol everywhere seems very quiet many enclosures empty, many smaller monkeys moved around did see loads of penguins lol don’t know whether the tapirs have moved yet as there was 2 crates in their enclosure? we have membership and certainly wouldn’t pay to go twycross at the moment I personally feel it has declined massively over the last 2 yrs such a shame x

Yes, Samantha passed away due to injuries so I am sire they are monitoring it, so it doesn't happen again.

That is how its been since the small subgroup of 4 moved over from the colony building. One(Samantha?) was recently introduced to the main group but has died, leaving three. Perhaps they will not risk any more introductions to integrate them with the others now.

Does that leave the old Ape House / Bonobo area empty then?
Yes according to the new map it doesn’t show anything in there, I’ve uploaded a photo in the gallery it show plenty of empty spaces

For a very long time the group of 4 were in the first enclosure, then they swapped them, something to do with Tuli causing trouble or something.

Very sad about Samantha but maybe it simplifies the remaining introductions because her support of Peter made life difficult. I fear for Tommy though because he’s so huge but absolutely clueless and may frighten/offend.

I know quite a lot of them were getting on but making one (+ oddments) group has taken a huge toll on Twycross’s chimps. I hope there are no more losses.

I can't quite remember how many in total but yes, they've lost a number of chimps in recent years. Some have been deaths seemingly related to the moves and integrations, others from non-related issues, like the two that died from the heater malfunction incident in the old colony building. Overall I do much prefer seeing them as a single group than how they used to be in those dreadful old cages, but its all been at quite some cost I agree.

This is the list I have of the chimps including those that have passed away over the past few years. If this is all correct (please correct me if not) there are now 13 chimps at Twycross split into the two groups, with 10 passing away since 2016 from various causes.

Coco 1965
Jambo 1982
Holly 1982
Flynn 1986
Josie 1988
Victoria 1990
Jomar 1990
Genet 1995
Tuli 2007
Kibali 2003

William 1982
Peter 1992
Tommy 1995

Danny 1996-2019

I didn't realise Twycross lost so many Chimps since 2016. They lost a few others since 2010 like Benjie, Mwekundu, Becky, Ricky etc.

Back in around 1999, Twycross had around 34 Chimps.

I thought Jambo, the elder, albino Chimp had passed away. I remember hearing that he had a heart attack. I believe Jambo’s Son is the now the only albino Chip at Twycross Zoo.

I think it’s the other way round, Mongo was Jambo’s son and he died after failing to wake up from an anaesthetic.

It has taken a huge toll getting them together, but not so long ago they were living in unnatural pairs in the hideous chimp row. As sad as it is, I suppose to an extend it is nature i.e. chimps thrashing it out among themselves.

They were/are not albino- they are chocolate coloured , but its a colour variation which also seems to carry a gene for extreme alopecia causing baldness in some males.

I saw Jambo with a very similar wrist injury a few years ago. He seems to challenge the dominant male Kibale every so often but comes off worst.

I wonder how Jambo fits into the group these days. Is he on the fringes or is he 'second in command'?

If he is 'second in command' then would it be normal for him to challenge the dominant male every so often (presuming that his injuries were caused by Kibale)?

It's a question that's been asked a few times in recent years, but should he even be in the group?
