I had a brilliant day at Twycross. Some news I thought I’d share:
The female Pileated Gibbon stomach is very round and I heard from a keeper that they think she is expecting. If this is true this would be amazing news. Although Helmet the male is very old being around 44-45. The female Valentina has good genetics so this will be fantastic if this is true but this is just a theory that the keepers and I think.
Ozala is not expecting according to a keeper, she is just very fat and is food dominant. She is still on contraceptive and they aren’t looking to breed from her because her genetics are over represented in Europe.
The finch + parrot walkthrough aviary is finally open again. Currently it only has one Turquoise and One Bourke’s parrot but they are hoping to acquire a mate for both species. It contains Bengalese and Zebra finches but they are looking for more species to add to the aviary. I made sure to give my suggests on calm finches speaking from experience with my finches and aviary haha.
It was confirmed by a keeper the pelicans have been moved to a new collection while they redevelop the whole area at the back but unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to know. The bush dogs are still at the zoo according to the keeper and hopefully they’ll be on show again soon.
I know a few people on here were interested in the Gibbons names so here it is. (Gibbon Forest)
1.1 Siamang (Mother called Tango and Son called Darwin)
1.1.1 Northern-White Cheeked Gibbon (Females name is Kampuchea, the Male is called Earl and the Offspring Is called Hanoi
1.1 Agile Gibbon (I couldn’t catch the Mothers name but her son is called Storm and he is the brown one while his mom his black)
1.1 Pileated Gibbon (Male called Helmet and Female called Valentina)
The Siamang enclosure (old great ape nursery near the Meerkats and Amur Leopards) is being painted to a light green)
The male African-Spurred Tortoise have been separated, in their usual enclosure near the Spider Monkeys houses 0.2 and next to them closest to the Dikdiks houses 1.0. They were separated because the male kept trying to mate with the females and they didn’t want that.
The leopard tortoises are still at the zoo. They are BTS because where they used to live (inside the Giraffe house) the humidity wasn’t right for them and it kept getting “fidgety” a keeper told me.
Lorikeet landing is closed because of an illness that has been spotted in a few lorikeets. It can’t harm humans I was told by the keeper but they want to make sure it’s fine and less stressful on the animals.
