Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2023

I've not seen this done in a UK zoo before, but worth mentioning that a couple of other UK-based attractions have used a very similar model - the National Football Museum and Beamish spring to mind.
The Deep in Hull do this also.

You are welcome for the information. I know which guidebook you are on about as I have that one too telling you a little about the Enchanted Forest. I do vaguely remember walking through it about 30 years ago but can't remember the full list of species or the layout of it. I only remember Bats and Toucans.

I have just about every Twycross Zoo guidebook that they produced but I might be still missing the odd one.
I’m on a mission to collect every guidebook now lol. They are really interesting to read.

There going full on with it, it seams just seen a tv advertisement on sky sports for Twycross concentrating on the buy one ticket come back for free for the year

Does anyone know why Twycross is currently moving around the two different troops of chimpanzees? I’ve noticed that over the past couple of months they’d swap them around into the different indoor enclosure.

Does anyone know if Samantha has successfully been moved into Jambos troop?

We listened to a chat last wk and the lady talking said it was 3 males on one side so I presume so

I wonder if they will keep the 3 males separate now, as I think the original plan was to have a big troop. I am so pleased Samantha is well; she is the Kathy Beale of chimpanzees ;)

I was told that they are simply making better use of the building, which is also more enriching for the chimps. Samantha was successfully integrated into Jambo’s group over 2 years ago and is doing well (despite a false story of her death).

As for the small group of chimps - sadly, the zoo have just announced that William passed away yesterday. I don’t believe they were planning to introduce the two groups anymore but who knows what will happen with Tommy and Peter now?

Ah okay. Also sorry didn’t see you already posted about the passing of William. I was on a Walk when it popped up so I thought I’d mention it here before reading your comment.

It’s brilliant to hear Samantha is doing well in Jambos troop. I was told they were planning to introduce Tommy, Peter and William by a keeper.

You’re right, introducing them was the original plan but I believe it has changed a few times since then due to various issues. But it’ll be interesting to see what happens with the 2 remaining males in that group now.

Such sad news about William. He was such a character and will be greatly missed. It won't be the same without him. Condolence from all of us, to the staff and to all the keepers.

I had a short but lovely visit to Twycross today. I straight away went to see the chimpanzees. Jambos troop (like usual) were loud but Tommy and Peter seemed upset (what is expected) and they knew William won’t be coming back. I hope soon they get introduced to jambos troop or perhaps be rehomed to somewhere where they can be introduced to another troop.

The old dusky langur exhibit next to miniature monkeys is furnished and is ready for some inhabitants.

Would think the best option would be to try and re home then given they have had five years now to try and introduce them and allow the bigger troop to have all the area and option of outside all the time, another alternative could be to try and introduce some of the outsiders of the larger troop to these two to balance the troops up and calm jambos troop down, would think it would be a fairer fight introducing two smaller groups than a pair into a larger troop

Originally in a group of six, these last two castrated(?) males would seem to have little chance of being integrated with the main group, if after so long they haven't managed it so far. Perhaps rehoming them somewhere like Monkeyworld would be the best answer now- with different groups and so a better chance of integration in one of them perhaps?

Went to Twycross Zoo today to renew the passes and dropped in on the four ape species.

Orang Utans - Batu was trying to hide outside under a big plastic basket. Found Basuki and his mum inside. He's about the same age now as Hujan is at Monkey World and they moved Hujan into the nursery as he was too interested in what Tuan was doing romancing his ladies. With it being a far smaller set up I worry about whether keeping Basuki in close confines with Dad is safe. Dad appeared indoors with plastic bucket and hid again, with the other two watching intently. So maybe there's nothing to be concerned with...yet. Having spoken with staff at Dudley earlier in the year I believe all zoos wanting new Orang facilities need an enclosure for a bachelor male so maybe Batu will stay where he is with the family moving to the new exhibit once built...speculation...

Gorillas - All outside enjoying a feed before coming in. Oumbi had his aubergine in his mouth, an impressive silverback. Inside one of the viewing windows is boarded up so maybe he's been a bit too boisterous. The youngest member of the troop who I've seen annoying the dominant male in years past seems to have chilled out a bit and he was sat on his perch eating.

Chimps and Bonobos - Saw both briefly. Chimps all indoors possibly due to the weather though you rarely see them in the outdoor bit. Bonobos entertaining as always. Two of the younger ones were fighting and winding up one of the older females.

As a general note although I wasn't there long some of the viewing windows appeared clearer than in the past and the small monkeys building was open which was nice. Saw Jahly the tiger on the tunnel which was filled with a large puddle of water and saw an amur leopard but no sign of a snow leopard. Heavens opened as we left but will be back later in the year for another visit.

How many chimps does William's passing leave them with now? I'd love to see a new birth TZ, but I have no idea whether they are in a position to do that right now.
On another note, does anyone know whether the "zoobilee" exhibition is still on? I haven't had chance to go to TZ for a while, so I hope I have not missed it.

Had a nice day out today at Twycross. What made my day was seeing the Dusky Langur outside. Even though it tried to attack me through the glass lol. I was there for a good half an hour just watching them and it appears they only have 1.1. Does anyone know what happened to the rest of them? From what I was last told they had 1.2.2 and that was back in November 2022.

The gibbons were singing, i haven’t really been in there while they were all singing and when people say it gets loud in there, they weren’t lying. Thought it was very cool to see all of the gibbons singing.

The howlers have moved into where the L’hoests used to be before moving to the old bonobo enclosure. Though I believe this is temporary because the Howlers indoor enclosure near the Francois langurs is being renovated.

Lots of things have been repainted + there are new murals around the zoo.

Had a little look into the Rhino School House where they have some of the old PG chimps exhibition collection in there. Unfortunately the power was cut so you couldn’t see it very well but it was still cool to see the exhibit.
