Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2023

Twycross definitely had Doria's tree kangaroo back in the 1980s; I saw the species there many times. They bred there too.
I saw tree kangaroos at Twycross in mid 1970s unfortunately in my guide book for that visit it does not stipulate what species.Do you think they are the same species as the Dorias?

It is literally just a wall. I doubt the chimps mind it. They have a huge outdoor and indoor area.

But when most zoos now go for naturalistic enclosures, like (for example) Dudley’s chimp enclosure which has an electric fence alongside a native hedge, Twycross’ enclosure sticks out (in a negative way) and doesn’t help with enjoying being in that area.

But, apart from the new gibbon area, most of the Twycross primate/ape areas are unnatural and are areas I don’t enjoy being in.

That’s why I would hope the new enclosures for the orangs, and other apes further down the line, are more naturalistic.

I think Doria's tree kangaroo is the only species of tree kangaroo that Twycross has ever had.

I remember seeing Dorias T Kangaroos. I loved watching them and up so close. I was just a kid, riding my bike every weekend from Hinckley through Market Bosworth and Little Twycross to get to the zoo, where I’d spend hours observing the Ukari, Proboscis monkeys, Baikal Seals and Joe the gorilla. It felt like Baboons and Macacques were the only groups of primates missing in this once great collection?

I believe they were the only omissions. They had a very extensive Primate collection in those days. Sadly it has declined since then.

Agree. But I do think it would look nicer if they’d just paint it green on the inside and give it some cladding/decoration on the outside.
They went to all the trouble of building a huge and spacious new enclosure for them but then just didn't go the extra mile and finish it off properly. Sure the chimps don't care but aethsetically the wall is still hideously ugly without being toned down in a naturalistic colour.

Who knew a wall could provoke such outrage? I really like chimpanzee Eden and I would argue the indoors enclosure is the best in UK. Visited at the weekend. Still busy. Really enjoyed seeing Lope, as perhaps this is the last time I will see him. He has grown into a big lad!

I want to ask again: Is there anybody here who can give me date concerning the new bonobo exhibit. Did any construction works take place insind or only outside?

Thank you very much.

There isn’t any plans right now to construct a new bonobo enclosure. The plan is to construct the National Science and Conservation Centre.

I heard the zoo expanded the bonobo exhibit. I am looking for the data of the expanded exhibit. Thanks.

There hasn’t been any expansions for the bonobos. They were moved into one of the whole chimpanzee enclosures but nothing else has changed. This was in 2021 I believe.

@Pandaboi
They use the old indoor enclosure? Do you know the area of the chimpanzee enclosure? What happened to the former bonobo outdoor yard?

The former enclosure now houses Lope a bachelor western lowland gorilla who is going to a zoo in France soon. I do not know how big the enclosure is but they use the indoor enclosure too. The chimpanzees have moved to chimpanzee Eden in 2018. There is two indoor enclosures and two outdoor enclosures, they are small but allows both troops to go outside at the same time.
