Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2024

That’s great news. But are they really the most endangered lemur species?
The mongoose lemur (Eulemur mongoz) is one of several species of 'critically endangered' lemur species (https://www.lemurconservationnetwor...uploads/2021/04/IUCN-Red-List-Data-Lemurs.pdf)
The other critically endangered species are:
Lemuridae:White-collared lemur (E cinereiceps), blue-eyed black lemur (E flavifrons), Alaotre reed lemur (Hapalemur alaotrensis), golden bamboo lemur (H aureus), greater bamboo lemur (Prolemur simus), red ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra), black-and-white ruffed lemur (V variegata) Indriidae: Bemaraha woolly lemur (Avahi cleesei), Sambirano woolly lemur (A unicolor), Indri indri), silky sifaka (Propithecus candidus), Coquerel's sifaka (P coquereli), crowned sifaka (P coronatus), Van der Decken;s sifaka (P decekenii), diademed sifaka (P diadema), Perrier's sifaka (P perrieri), golden-crowned sifaka (P tattersallu), Verreaux's sifaka (P verreauxi)
Lepilemuridae: Ahmanson's sportive lemur (Lepilemur ahmansonori), Grewcock's sportive lemur (L grewcockorum), Holland's sportive lemur (L hollandorum), Jame's sportive lemur (L jamesorum), Mittermeier's sportive lemur (L mittermeieri), red-tailed sportive lemur (L ruficaudatus), Sahamalaza sportive lemur (L sahamalaza), Sahafary sportive lemur (L sepetentrionalis), Nosy Be sportive lemur (L tymerlachsoni)
Cheirogaleidae: Sibree's dwarf lemur ICheirogaleus sireei), Madame Berthe's mouse lemur (Microcebus berthae), Gerp's mouse lemur (M gerpi), Bemanasy mouse lemur (M mamiratra)

Considering how many critically endangered species there are, I would be surprised if the mongoose lemur is the most endangered of all

2.1 Mongoose Lemurs arrived (as reported above) here is some more information on the trio:

1.1 Arrived from Wildheart Animal Sanctuary.
1.0 Arrived from Bristol Zoo Project.

The pair from Wildheart are called ‘Bjork’ (22) and ‘Catherine’ (26) while ‘Rufus’ (19) is from Bristol. The zoo is hoping they can breed in the future. All 3 have met each other and have settled in well. I’ll try and upload some photos of them tomorrow.

26 years old for a female is pushing it...

Sad news to report. Samantha the chimpanzee has passed away at the beginning of November. Her health suddenly declined after multiple factors. She arrived at Twycross on the 31st August 1983 and had two children at Twycross Elly (1990) and Peter (1992). She will be greatly missed.

This brings the chimpanzee population at Twycross to 5.3. ‘Jambo, Kibali, Jomar, Tommy, Flynn, Josie, Tuli, Victoria’.

BIG NEWS!!

Next year, we're opening a BRAND-NEW animal habitat at Twycross Zoo!

Here's some clues... ️

Coming Spring 2025.

New reptile house. Is the old one getting demolished?

The zoo has announced a new habitat planned for 2025 with various images of inverts and reptiles as clues. Possibly a reptile house or tropical house? The zoo already has some invertebrates and a pretty healthy herptile collection.

The old reptile house is still standing? Which building is it? I’m in my early/mid 20’s so the original one was before my time.

Any ideas whereabouts in the zoo the new habitat will be? Also, where in the zoo are the mongoose lemurs? Assuming they are on show, of course.
