Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2024

The zoo keeps 24 species of Primates (with 94 Individuals) mainly with 10 Guenons, 11 Langurs, 7 Lemurs, 11 Lesser Apes and 30 Great Apes.

Chester and Monkey World keep large numbers of Primate species.

I did ask a longer serving member of staff about the Baboons and they told me that Molly and Natalie never wanted them during their time in charge. I’m not sure why the last few management teams have never added them into the collection.

I remember back in the late 1990s, Twycross kept around 48 species of primate.

Although DeBrazza's seem 'relatively' laid back, it is likely that any guenon species will need to be re-started with pairs, forcing female bonds to be broken. This is pretty well known, and it should not really be necessary to re-invent the wheel.

I think London will be trying though with their new Dianas- 2 sisters being introduced to a new male+ old female he has been with(?) for just a few months.

To my knowledge they have never had Macaques at Twycross either. Though I was once told there was a short-lived tenure of Lion-tailed macaques, but that they were soon moved on as they 'tore up the grass' in the enclosure. I am not sure just how correct this is though- the part about them having the species at all. But I think M & N were fairly keen on 'neat' looking enclosures so it sounds believable. It might be the reason Baboons have never been kept either. Also I think nowadays they are more into consolidating the species they have or aquiring new ones that they can house in existing enclosures. Baboons wouldn't come into that last category.

According to Zootierliste, Twycross used to have:
Blue-eyed black, ring-tailed, red-bellied, crowned and common brown lemurs, Lac Alaotra gentle lemur, black and white ruffed lemur
Greater slow loris
Black, white and Geoffroy;s tufted-ear marmosets, black-tailed marmoset, Goeldi's monkey, cotton-top and golden-handed tamarins, Illiger's saddle-back tamarin, Golden-headed lion tamarin
Southern Bolivian night monkey
Black-capped and white-fronted capuchins
White-faced saki, red uakari
Bolivian red howler monkey. Black-faced and red-faced black, Colombian brown and black-handed spider monkeys, woolly monkey
Lion-tailed macaque, Allen's swamp monkey, western guereza, black-footed crowned and Lowe's monkeys, eastern lesser white-nosed monkey, Diana, roloway, red-tailed, Schmidt's and yellow-nosed red-tailed guenons, Hamlyn's monkey, Kikuyu guereza, Javan lutung, maroon red surili, silvered leaf monkey Phayre's langur, southern lowland wetzone and western purple-faced langur, tufted grey langur, red-shanked douc langur, proboscis monkey
Kloss, lar, eastern Mueller's, western black-crested and Hainan crested gibbons
Sumatran and non-specific orang-utans, Central and eastern common chimpanzees

Lion-tailed macaque,

Evidence they did indeed
According to Zootierliste, Twycross used to have:
Lion-tailed macaque,

So they did have them. It must have been for a only a comparatively short while as I was a fairly regular visitor in the past and never saw them. I would also think the story of them ripping up the grass being the reason they were moved out is probably a true one in that case.

Sorry the spamming the forum with messages:
Over the weekend and today I’ve been speaking with some of the Great Ape keepers about the animals.

Bonobos: The plan is to breed Yuli and Batia. Currently Batia is not as mature but they have been monitoring Yuli’s cycles which are a bit irregular at the moment but she is ready. As expected Diatou is taking a more of a back seat role within her group, this means Cheka is becoming a dominant female within Diatou’s group (when Diatou is in the same troop as Cheka)

Bornean Orangutans: Basuki’s future home hasn’t been finalised yet so for now he will be staying. They weren’t sure if Maliku will stay with Batu as they won’t be breeding from him again. There are plans in place for new orangutans to arrive at Twycross soon (no details on individuals).

The new NSCC will be started early next year.

Chimpanzees: Kibali has also been separated from the main troop as he’s been kicking off because he missed Jomar. They are hoping to keep those three together then introduce others in to get better relations with Tommy.

Something i found interesting was Tommy and Flynn both have heart monitors, Tommy is fine it's just so they can get a healthy comparison with Flynn who has heart issues.

There are still plans to bring in female chimpanzees but they have all been put on hold with the current group being split up.

Hopefully this answers any questions people had about the current status of some species at the zoo.

Thank you for the info. Is Flynn's heart monitor still working? As I got told that wasn't anymore before.

Same story as I told you about the ex Newquay Diana Monkey sisters...with guenons and some other species, it does often seem difficult to add a new male to related females, either to mother/daughter, or sibling females, as they gang up on him or reject him, at least in a zoo.
(When he first arrived Paignton also had some trouble initially with their current male Toby I think) At best it irons itself out over time, at worst its injury or worse. That's why I'm a bit concerned over the London mixing that is in the offing, though in that case it seems it will be 2 & 2 meeting together though again two sisters will be involved..
I acknowledge the rationale and do suspect Cercopithecinae ecology would prescribe a social structure 1.1 pairings and that related individuals may disperse as juveniles/subadults to another troupe (currently a question-mark on my part)???!

It is quite amazing. I didn't know Tommy had one as well.
Perhaps not so well known as in gorillas heart disease seems to be an issue in older chimpanzee. I wonder if their husbandry and stressor factors when younger may have played a part in these health concerns???

Just to show everyone what the current “Main Complex” looks like with the moves around. These are the exhibits closest to Himalaya and Gibbon Forest. I used the Twycross Zoo map and just added some text boxes.

Is there any updates on the rhino? Last time I visited they were mixing the male and female.
I believe they are still hoping ‘Nandi’ can breed (iirc she’s 25?) I’ve not checked in with the rhinos for a while. If I can find anyone tomorrow I’ll post an update on the mixing. When was your last visit?

Is the closed open-topped enclosure to the right of where the male De Brazza is?

Yes the male De Brazza’s enclosure is connected to the open topped exhibit but they haven’t had access for a while now.

Before all of the recent moves the De Brazza’s had access to all the closed topped exhibits on the right side and the Francois Langurs were on the left side enclosures.
