Starting off 2025 with some positive news.

-The planning permission for the amended plans for the National Science & Conservation Centre has been permitted which means work will be started soon. The zoo had to change the previous plans due to various reasons.

-In the upcoming weeks Bonobos ‘Yuli’ and ‘Batia’ will hopefully be taken off contraception and be put into a troop with the males selected to breed with them. I believe the males selected are ‘Lucuma’ and ‘Rubani’. Although this may change.

-The keepers hope to breed Black Rhinos ‘Nandi’ and ‘Sudan’ this year which is positive news. There is the concern that the female is too old to breed but they will be giving it a go.

-There is no current plans to bring in a new female Snow Leopard.

This exciting news comes not long after the group had moved into their newly refurbished enclosure designed by our keepers

FUN FACT: 48 hours after birth, the male becomes the primary care giver, carrying the infant until around they are around 6 months old

More information: this is the same baby who was born 14th December 2024.

I was at Twycross today watching Jahly the Sumatran Tiger having her feed. I noticed she has two shaved patches, one on each back leg (one on her inside right hind, and one on her outside left hind leg). Not sure if she's having medical treatment at the moment.

While we are on the subject of Tigers. I know one of the Tigers recently had a cataract surgery in preparation for breeding (informed by one of the keepers)

Ah, that would make sense then. I need to check my video footage. Jahly was very cross-eyed before, I hadn't thought of that in terms of it being possibly cataract related.

It would be brilliant for Twycross to breed the Sumatran Tigers. I believe the last time Twycross had kittens (of any Big Cat species) was in 2016.

And with the recent loss of Irma (the female Snow Leopard) I hope they can also get a new companion for Khumbu the male.
