Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2025

Twycross has announced the opening of a reptile house this Easter called The World Of Reptiles & Spiders! Log in to Facebook

This new exhibit will be home to some of the world’s rarest spiders, reptiles are more.

In my opinion Twycross has lacked a good Herptile collection over the years.
I hope they bring in a crocodilian species to the mix (even if it's something small like a Caiman or Dwarf crocodiles) :D

Same here, they’ve housed multiple species in the past, would be nice to see. Hoping we get a new snake or two, a few lizards and tortoises (know they already have several species but would love for them to house either some European species like they used to or maybe even red-footed tortoise) but definitely hoping for crocodilians as well as any tropical spiders!

A bit of sadder news to mention on here. The Nyala is no longer present in the collection as the last female ‘Amira’ passed away in January. I believe there are plans to bring in new individuals in the future.

In lighter news. A few of the species set to join the Reptile House are already present at the zoo and are currently kept in the Education Building near the Rhino House. There is a small room to the left of the building which houses herptiles behind the scenes.

Could they move the zebras in with the giraffe?

Chester Zoo membership doesn't allow a visit to Twycross Zoo anymore after the 1st of March!
I wonder if that will be the other way around as well?

Update from Twycross Zoo
"As we move forward with our new Conservation Membership, which provides a host of new benefits, our reciprocal visit arrangements with Chester Zoo, Colchester Zoo, Bristol Zoo Project, and Paignton & Newquay Zoo will come to an end on 1st May 2025.

We encourage you to take advantage of these reciprocal visits before this date, particularly with the highly anticipated Heart of Africa opening at Chester Zoo this Easter.

Each zoo structures its membership and benefits differently, and reciprocal visits are based on a shared ticketing approach. In some cases, maintaining these arrangements is no longer feasible moving forward. While this means some changes, we remain committed to offering great value to our members, and we will continue to have reciprocal entry with Marwell Zoo & Edinburgh Zoo and new for 2025…Hertfordshire Zoo."

The new reptile exhibit will be opening to the public on the 6th April. Conservation Memberships can visit the new exhibit the day before on the 5th April.

Any indication where in the zoo it will be? Surely some building/refurbishment works have started if it’s opening in just 6 weeks.

Random question: does anyone know where the (Lego) Bricks statues are for the Orca & Mako Shark?

We found all of them, apart from those 2, and I didn't think to ask someone while there, lol.

I'm not knowledgeable enough about Twycross to know if there was anything new when we went yesterday.
The Titi Monkey baby was now mostly of the mom's back and grown quite a bit since last saw it 4 weeks ago.

The parking: it asks you online to buy parking, but we didn't because we drive a motorbike and sometimes they are free, so we asked guest services.
They took our reg plate, and said that parking is still free until April 5 (transition period).

Now, if we would have just bought it online to be hassle free, and if it would have charged us online, to then find out it's still free until April, I'd be annoyed at having had to pay 3£ online.

Twycross have announced that one of their employees has won the BIAZA “Woman of the Year” award, which nicely coincides with International Women’s Day. Aware this isn’t any breaking animal-related news but for one of the zoo’s employees to win such a prestigious award goes to show how the zoo is gradually bouncing back and going from strength to strength after the difficult period that was 2020-2023.

I’ve posted a photo on the media page of work finally starting on the NSCC!

In other news:
-Basuki the young male orangutan is being moved into the former Diana Monkey enclosure once it goes under minor refurbishments.
He’ll be on his own then I take it?

Correct. It will give his parents outside access all throughout the day as we get into the summer months. Currently the adults are in the on-show area while Basuki is in the back bedroom with rotational access to the outside enclosure.
