Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2025

I don’t think there is a massive issue for Tapir populations going on in the light of this move or wider legislative changes - zoos go in and out of animals all the time and Twycross has exited a number of species over time (leaving the zoo looking practically deserted in some areas for a while with old fence panels blocking stuff off and looking for all the world like a disused garden centre), though it seems to be going ahead with more positive changes now.

Recent updates from TZ:

The baby De Brazza’s Monkey is now two and a half months old and is doing brilliant. Chi, who is a first time mother, is doing exceptionally well. Keepers believe the baby is a male however still difficult to sex at this time.

Construction work is progressing at a fast rate. It’s lovely to see this project finally happen after waiting many years for the development.

Both chimpanzee troops now have a new climbing frame which has really brought the troop back to life. I’ve never seen them so active. It’s been good for Tommy as he seems to be closer with Jomar and Kibali who are still separated from the rest of the troop.

A male Red Titi Monkey has moved into World Of Small Monkeys exhibit. The building also houses Silvery Marmosets and Emperor Tamarins.

Female Snow Leopard Nuri has settled in well. If all goes well she will be introduced to male Khumbu in the near future.

The old picnic building near the Tigers has been demolished and has been replaced with arcade and food stalls.

Are there tensions between Jambo and Kibali? Would that be the reasoning for the separation? How many chimps do they have in total now? I haven't been for a little while ( not like me) so looking forward to going soon.

Tommy got bullied by the females, particularly Victoria because the females didn’t like how much attention Tommy was receiving from Jambo. Originally it was just Jomar and Tommy separated but Kibali was kicking off not being with Jomar. The zoo keeps 8 individuals: Jambo, Flynn, Tommy, Kibali, Jomar, Victoria, Tuli and Josie.

Interesting. Thanks for that. I wonder if they will every breed them? I guess with many of them being hybrids, they can't at the moment?

There are plans to breed p.t verus chimpanzees in the future but because Tommy was pushed out by the females it means the zoo has two troops of chimpanzees again which makes things difficult when they come to introduce new p.t verus chimpanzees.

I’m not that familiar with Twycross’ current chimp facility. How do they run two troops? Do they have multiple indoor and outdoor enclosures or do they alternate access to inside/outside?

There are two indoor habitats with 5 bedrooms and there is a single large outdoor exhibit. Access to the outdoor enclosure is rotated during the day to give both troops the chance to be outside.

Thanks. Do they plan to get back to one troop eventually? I believe the new zoo standards released earlier this year state that great apes should have 24hr access to all indoor, outdoor and offshow spaces of their enclosure, so Twycross will have to meet this eventually.

They do hope to integrate the boys back in with the main troop eventually. Tommy seems to be a lot more confident now and has built strong friendships with Jomar and Kibali which will help him when he goes back in with the females.

More updates from TZ:

Female L’Hoest Monkey, Masindi, passed away from a liver disease. She was the mother to other females in the troop Tumba and Bikonzi. This leaves Twycross with 2.2 (1.0 lives elsewhere).

Female Dusky Langur, Darcy, passed away from intestinal issues. Her father, Casey, will move to a European collection. This will be the end of the species at Twycross.

2.0 Black-Headed Spider Monkey brothers, Loki and Amabel moved to Amazona in Norfolk.

Male L’Hoest Monkey, Kanye, is hopefully going to be sent to a collection in Europe. He was kicked out of the main troop a while ago by his father Gimini.

Red Ruffed Lemur pair, Nadia and Fang, will hopefully move on show again soon. They currently live behind the Black Rhinos.

Black Rhino Update:
In recent days the pair of Eastern Black Rhinos, Nandi and Sudan, have been introduced to each other in the hopes of breeding. They’ve been hoping to do this for a while but certain things have been delaying this.

Today male Sudan was allowed into the grass paddock where Nandi was, as soon as he entered the paddock he tried to go over to her but she moved away cautiously. After eating some browse he tried his luck again and was charged away by Nandi. Later in the day they were both close to each other and introductions are going well according to keepers who are constantly observing the pair. Fingers crossed for a baby rhino!

You'll probably get arthritis in those crossed fingers long before there is any
potential rhino baby.....

The zoo announced earlier today that their Hazel dormice (located on-show in a purpose built facility in the Gruffalo area) have left the collection and have been reintroduced locally. Although, this means a loss of an animal in the collection that could be considered a “rarity”, they were only supposed to be there temporarily and is excellent news with Leicestershire being one of several counties where Hazel dormice had become locally extinct. This in conjunction with the zoo recently engaging with the BioBlitz in their nature reserve, strengthens their credentials for rewilding/conservation at home, so all in all, brilliant news!

Can confirm all zoos are jumping on the native species bandwagon at a very fast rate!

Very true, hope this leads to greater public engagement re the conservation and re-establishing of native species! I know of some excellent non-zoo rewilding projects taking place in the Midlands with Kedllestone Hall hoping to release dormice into a, large woodland enclosure alongside an ancient domestic pig breed (serving as a wild boar proxy) and afaik, the nature reverse in Willington seeking to introduce elk alongside their resident beavers in order to restore natural wetland processes. Won’t dwell on it too much as obviously need to keep this thread Twycross related but all very exciting stuff!
