Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2025

I dont "get" the whole capybara thing.

They've been in zoos forever, they aren't exotic or endangered, they do nothing except stand around looking gormless, and they don't even have a TV advert accidentally promoting them like the meerkats (washes mouth out with soap).

So many much more charismatic species to see.
They're very friend-shaped

That's always been my thinking too. The other week though I saw one at Exmoor Zoo swimming and submerging in its pool during a heavy rainstorm. I know they are semi-aquatic but it was behaviour I hadn't witnessed before in a zoo. If they did that often they'd be interesting to watch perhaps but usually they just seem to be sitting doing nothing.

Recent updates from TZ:

The baby De Brazza’s Monkey is now two and a half months old and is doing brilliant. Chi, who is a first time mother, is doing exceptionally well. Keepers believe the baby is a male however still difficult to sex at this time.

Construction work is progressing at a fast rate. It’s lovely to see this project finally happen after waiting many years for the development.

Both chimpanzee troops now have a new climbing frame which has really brought the troop back to life. I’ve never seen them so active. It’s been good for Tommy as he seems to be closer with Jomar and Kibali who are still separated from the rest of the troop.

A male Red Titi Monkey has moved into World Of Small Monkeys exhibit. The building also houses Silvery Marmosets and Emperor Tamarins.

Female Snow Leopard Nuri has settled in well. If all goes well she will be introduced to male Khumbu in the near future.

The old picnic building near the Tigers has been demolished and has been replaced with arcade and food stalls.
The baby De Brazza's Monkey is a boy.
Twycross Zoo on Instagram: "IT’S A BOY! Earlier this year, our De Brazza monkey group grew by one with the arrival of an adorable infant born to first-time mum, Chai. We’re thrilled to share that we can now confirm — it’s a little boy! Don't forget to come and say hello on your next visit!! "

In that respect, based on the latest instalments of those adverts, we ought to be seeing more collections obtaining wombats (which id happily welcome over more giant water rats!)

Careful what you wish for. ..Wombats are notoriously poor exhibits, they basically stay hidden away sleeping most of the time.

I’m glad they’ve started on the new orangutan exhibit. Twycross certainly can claim they are the only zoo in the country with all 4 great apes but they can’t claim any of their enclosures are the best. They are all very small and sub-par by modern standards. Hopefully they can follow it with new gorilla and bonobo enclosures like you say, especially with the new spotlight on the future of great apes in zoos.
With the exception of chimpanzee Eden, which is excellent, particularly the inside.
