This is my new thread about twycross zoo , i have been reading some of the treads and would like to see pictures of the orangutan encoulrse please as people are sayning not to good ! Twycross zoo orangutans have had many babies in the past so they have a good breeding progamme the point is if the encoulurse wasnt right they wount breed ! so pictures please

One comment made by a keeper at another zoo about tywcross's enclosures was "We'll if they have nothing else to do"

Today zoo's are expected to provide quality exhibits for animals in their care, while yes they have very good breeding records with some of their species, But does that mean that they should not also supply a stimulating enclosure?

Am sure their are some photo's somewhere, which will just show you how barren the enclosure is, and the lack of space away from the public eye.

No its not!!!

In your second post you're already asking about parentage of the Orangutans at another zoo- Chester. Its a different subject and has nothing to do with Twycross.

You wouldn't by any chance be Orange09 up to your old tricks again? ;)

Amy was born in Weybridge on 23 September 1983, daughter of Louis and Janey, and owned by Jeremy Keeling. When he moved to Monkey World Amy went with him.

She was given to Keeling by Gordon Mills, who owned the Weybridge Apes, when he went to America. 'Amy' was therefore their first Orangutan at MonkeyWorld. The 2nd was 'Banghi'- donated by Chester Zoo as a mate for 'Amy'. 'Gordon' was their offspring though 'Banghi' later died.

the point is if the encoulurse wasnt right they wount breed !

No, that's exactly not the point! Many species, including orangutans will breed in totally unsuitable enclosures provided they are normal, compatable animals, well fed and with a basic level of husbandry. Similarly if they're incompatable or poorly socialised in some way, they won't breed even in the very best and most palatial enclosure. You can't judge the quality of an enclosure just because animals breed in it. People bred in the Concentration Camps during the war but they weren't good 'enclosures'....

How can they affored the new development and yet be making redunances?

That exactly what I was going to say. They are spending god knows how many millions on the new welcome centre and snow leopard enclosure, and have to make staff redundant due to 'the economic climate'!!

Actually the staff redundacy`s are old news they all happened over 3 to 4 months ago,as it says in the article no keeping staff went,as for how they are doing all the building work outside funding is how they are doing the new entranace.

Fair enough then - thanks for the information. I am glad to hear it - that they havent gotten their priorities wrong :)

The snow leopards for the new Himalayan exhibit have been sourced and secured.
They are Suou, who was born in the wild but will come from Tama Zoo, in Japan, and Irma, who will come from Norden’s Ark, in Sweden.
