Twycross Zoo Twycross zoo

Anyone know of any major plans for the zoo over this year apart from the welcome center and lion enclosure. Anyone have any ideas whats going to happen to the dhole and lion enclosures, and is there going to be anymore new animal arrivals?

maybe you know this already but they are bringing in snow leopards for next year

I asked a keeper today black panther and the cage to the right is small as the leopard has an outdor run which is concealed. It is also small as the leopard normally in there doesn't spend it inside

I have been reading this interesting debate about Twycross, and thought I would share my opinion. Twycross is one of my local zoos, and so I go regularly (about 4 times a year for the last 20 years). In this time I have seen huge developments at the zoo.

Some of the enclosures (I refer to the giraffe, Lion, Leopard, etc.) are inaduquate, but this is mostly due to the enclosures being too small, it is impractical in most zoos to have large enclosures, but Twycross definatley has the space.

The new developments, such as the bornean avairy complex, are excellent (despite the choice of species), and it is obvious the money that has been put back into the zoo in the past few years.

Unfortunatley I think Twycross has become a victim of it's reputation, and for many people the changes have come too little too late.

Personally I think that although Twycross needs work , it has a lot of potential, and could certainly be improved and marketed better. A lot of work has been done to Twycross - it is hardly recognisable as the zoo from 10 years ago - and I think it deserves people to give it a second chance :)

I wouldn't call the leopard enclosure inadequate, in fact i think the leoaprd enclsoure is one of the better enclosures at twycross. And I think the elephant paddock is also very good (although I think they should accomodate for a resident bull)

I would say 'some work' rather than 'a lot of work' and I certainly don't agree the zoo is 'hardly recognisable' from ten years ago.

However, the new visitor/snow leopard area, new asian Lion & Dhole enclosures do all represent important new developments.

Do you know any details about the plans for the Common Chimpanzees?

I agree :)
I think the leopard enclosure itself is excellent, well designed, with the animal in mind, it is purely the size aspect I dislike, particularly the second (off show) run. Leopards have large home ranges - 50km2-100km2, and I think Twycross has the space to build a more suitable sized enclosure. WAZA recommends a minimum outdoor enclosure size of 500m2.

It is indeed a U.K first breeding this has been confirmed by Robmv (Who is updating the first breeding list on the Bartlett Society Website) 3 weeks ago when i first saw the baby,I remained quiet at the request of staff until the zoo was ready to annouce the sucessful birth.

A picture of the baby titi in the 'Sunday Telegraph' today , along with claims of a UK first breeding , which it is not .

The Zoochat member, "Fergie" has just reported that Boulas the gorilla will move to Twycross from Belfast (as posted in the Belfast news thread)

thought it was deserving of a mention here...

There are to be changes made to the gorilla group. Boulas the silverback is soon to move to Twycross as he has never produced any offspring during his time at Belfast. This will allow Gugas to establish himself as the new silverback. Also there will be a gorilla exchange happening with a French zoo - not sure which. One of Belfast females will be leaving (Not sure which...possibly Bikira) and a French female will come to Belfast - in the not too distant future.
