Biddi is certainly not too old to breed though having young so infrequently, and being rather overweight these days may affect her ability to concieve now. Also Boulas may(or may not) be infertile. Noone seems to know the answer to that question.

The new male from Port Lympne may be a full brother of Boulas, or an unrelated one. It depends on his name. Good news :)despite the very long interval with no male:(.
I`m pretty certain it`s the one you mentioned to me in a pm a few months back which 2was Timbou, just to add to what Malayan Tapir has said the introduction seems to be going well with Asante and Ozala, but Matadi has been put in his place but the staff don`t seem to be to worried about how things are going.

Excellent news - after such a long wait.
We could open a book on which male it might be. I'm sure it will be one of the bachelors; Jaja is the oldest in Djala's group and he's still a blackback. My twopenn'orth is either Djumbah (Jaja's elder brother) or just possibly Djimu who is the only grandson of Mr Aspinall's favourite male Djoum.
There's nothing on the Twycross website yet.

Alan
You`ve now got me doubting that i`ve got the right Gorilla in my last post as it could be Djumbah thats arrived i only caught the back end of the conversation from the member of staff that was telling us the name.

Some Gorilla News,

The new male gorilla arrived from port lympne last week and has already been introduced with Asante, Ozala and Matadi in the 'new' house.

This is fantastic news :D I can't wait to find out who it is (I visited Port Lympne in May and they are all fine specimens in the bachelor group). I will be visiting Twycross later this month whilst on holiday, so this is very exciting :)

Coldn`t it be Oumbi? He`s a full brother of Timbou, but mother-reared and he would be a much better candidate.

Timbou was originally mentioned, then yes, they were advised to send/take Oumbi instead as he was mother-reared. (Both these are brothers of Boulas). However it actually could be any one of ten or more animals!

Later they decided(or were advised) to have another instead.(see above)

I'm glad they didn't remove Matadi initially as reintegrating him later would have been more difficult- he's old enough now to tolerate a bit of rough treatment from a big male and I'm sure they will be soon be friends. Twycross actually made a good call there.

I agree, its seems where finaly seeing the results of the management change. It will be good for Matadi to have that role model in the group.

Is the new gorilla yet on show to the public does anyone know? Hopefully having a new gorilla in the gorup and both groups for that matter will liven both groups up a bit!

It was recommended by the studbook for him to remain in the group so that he learns how to be a Silver-back.Also its still planed to bring Boulas over from Belfast and put him in the other house.
On a none Gorilla note either tonight or tomorrow Twycross have a female Ground Cuscus arriving from Prague Zoo.

Good news - I would guess she's unrelated to the Blackpool animals? Excellent if so.

Will the new male be allowed to breed with Asante and Ozala? In theory coming from Port Lympne his genes are probably well represented but the majority of any relations are probably still kept at the two parks rather than the rest of the captive population?

Was there at one point another female in with the younger gorillas as she was being bullied in the old group?

I should hope thats th main point of Tywrcoss obtaining him.

Hey went to Twycross today. He is there for breeding I reckon. The gorillas were loads more active too. Matadi had a huge red bite or scratch mark on him but they were all fine together. Very nice Silverback. Big too.

Any chance you got a name?

Thats the main point of getting him, apart from making a complete group.

Eva from the older group was added at one point to this group to try and get her to breed again. It failed as she sat outside all the time and so she was returned to Mamfe's group. She is dead now. She was Asante's mother.

Males can inflict nasty wounds with their canine teeth, but they heal surprisingly quickly.

All we need is this new male's name. Is it 'Oumbi'?

Im afraid I have no name, however he is a fine silverback indeed. There are now 4 in the group I believe and yes he was in with the breeding group (matadis lot) One of the gorillas was sitting next to the new one. yeah matadis wound looked like it was healing well. Matadi was not near to the new gorilla, he was outside and came in every now and again. You currently cannot go inside the house, however there are keepers inside observing all the time during the day.

We can hope that this is the sign of a lesson learned. Obviously there is a risk involved in mixing Matadi with a silverback, even with his mother and half-aunt to protect him; but there is also a risk that he will not breed if he is not properly socialised. I trust that Asante and Ozala will be able to breed with the new male - whoever he is.

Alan

BTW not all the gorillas at Howletts & Port Lympne are from well-represented bloodlines. Both of the males I mentioned above are descended in part from animals with very few relatives - both were mother-raised too.
