Interesting site: US Aquariums

The opening of Boston’s New England Aquarium in 1969 ushered in a new age for aquariums, combining the traditional ideas found in the classic aquariums of the early 20th century with new technology and revised educational and research commitments. Aquariums have since proliferated. The following pages highlight the major free-standing aquariums in the United States.

Thanks for the link! I've visited 28 out of the 38 American aquariums, and the stats and facts are rather informative. Intriguingly 23 of them have opened to the public since 1990, and very few stretch back to decades before that as there are not very many truly historic aquariums in the United States.

A few side notes:

- New Jersey State Aquarium is now known as Adventure Aquarium
- Colorado's Ocean Journey is now known as Denver Downtown Aquarium (Landry's)
- missing from the list are many smaller aquatic facilities but a few big ones: Long Island Aquarium in New York City, Dallas World Aquarium (arguably more of a zoo) and the handful of Sea Life establishments that have sprung up in recent years.

Another large facility missing from the list is Downtown Aquarium Houston, whose website says it contains 500,000 gallons of aquatic exhibits.
