Uk help to find

Does Galloway still have them? If not when did they leave the collection?

They have never had Arctic Fox; I suspect you are thinking of the Corsac Foxes which are (as far as I know) still in the collection.

I'm pretty sure I'm thinking of Arctic fox, and not Corsac, as my if my memory serves me right, they weren't the right colour for Corsac.

Can any one use this list of so anyone know where I can see:

Kinkajus
Ghals/false ghals
Bushmasters
King cobra basically any collection of venomous snakes
Snub nosed monkeys
Yellow tailed wolly monkeys
Shanked douc/ any douc
Langers

Yeah, those will almost certainly have been Corsac :) as nothing I have come across suggests Galloway has held Arctic Fox, so the only alternative I could think of was if they were a recent arrival and your visit had been within the last year or so.

I saw the two species held side-by-side at Zoo Berlin in 2014; they are remarkably similar in appearance when seen thus.

Galloway has never had Arctic Fox, Palacerigg Country Park had two (spug or something like that) and then transferred to Camperdown Wildlife Centre.

KINKAJOU - held in about 9 UK collections last I heard; Gentleshaws, ZSL London, Newquay, Rodbaston, Porfell, Wild Animal Adventures, Amazon World, Amazonia and Five Sisters

GANGES GHARIAL - not held in the UK; 6 European collections hold the species.

SUNDA GHARIAL - held at Chester and Paignton, with the species intended to arrive at RSCC sometime in the near-future.

BUSHMASTER - there are no members of the genus Lachesis held in UK collections, though I suspect there *might* be in private hands. About 8 European collections hold members of the genus.

KING COBRA - the only UK collection holding King Cobra is ZSL London. As a rule venomous snakes are few and far between in public collections, but more numerous in private hands.

SNUB-NOSED MONKEY - no individuals of the genus Rhinopithecus are held in European collections, nor have they been barring a 6 month period at Dublin in 1987.

DOUC LANGUR - no individuals of the genus Pygathrix are held in the UK, and only a single Red-Shanked Douc is held in Europe, at Koln.

LANGURS - in terms of langur taxa found in the UK, the following are present: Mitred Surili at Howletts, Spectacled Langur at Twycross, Howletts and Port Lympne, Francois' Langur at Howletts, Colchester, Whipsnade, Twycross and Belfast, Javan Langur at Twycross, Howletts, Port Lympne and Monkey Haven, and Javan Surili at Howletts.

So there's no longer any at West Mid Safari Park? Haven't visited for a long time, but have always been very fond of their reptile house and I am sure they had Kings for several years.

Last one died in October 2014 or thereabouts, I believe. The WMSP reptile house still has more venomous snake taxa on display than any other UK collection other than ZSL London, mind you.

Thanks guys. I guess the extra danger of venomous snakes makes them unpractical in public collections when many keepers have to handle them

Due to the risk factors and complying with various regulations, coupled with the keeping of anti-venom is seen as the factors, there are many keepers who have experience of venomous snakes, especially those older keepers who have 30 plus years under their belt.

Anti venom is also expensive and has a very limited shelf life. The consequences of a venomous escape would be massive especially as snakes are very good at camouflage and with certain UK collections unable to keep their animas contained it's probably best hot snakes aren't popular in collections.

ZSL only have puff adder on the hot side

I have seen both species recently, and would think that the arctic are much larger than corsac, but otherwise both quite similar except in winter?

Well some one need to tell them to put them on the website. They only list puff adder under the reptile house section

Not quite true; there was a short-lived golden snub-nosed monkey at London Zoo before World War 2

Both Arctic and Corsac have a head/body length of between 45-68cm - I would assume the main difference in perceived size would be due to the dense fur coat of the former taxon.

To the frustration of many of us, zoo websites seldom give full inventories of what taxa are held or displayed; the following list is almost certainly inaccurate now as it derives from observations made in August 2014, but as of that date the following "hot" taxa were on-display in the reptile house:

Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis)
Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus)
Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum)
Puff Adder (Bitis arietans)
Nose-horned Viper (Vipera ammodytes ammodytes)
Sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes)
Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox)
Rhinoceros Viper (Bitis nasicornis)
False Water Cobra (Hydrodynastes gigas)
King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah)

Not quite true; there was a short-lived golden snub-nosed monkey at London Zoo before World War 2

Very interesting :) that will need adding to ZTL then!

Cotswold wildlife park had black mambas and a Puff adder also a couple of species of smaller viper

I believe that CWP now holds only Black Mamba, Puff Adder and Eyelash Pitviper - still a lot more than most collections, but somewhat diminished from the number once displayed.
