UK zoos & lockdown going forward...

I would assume the only implication for zoos would be if two (or more) households arranged to meet up at the zoo for a visit then they would be in breach. But enforcement seems unlikely.

I presented our annual passes to the person on the till this morning with a bit of paper with our booking number on it (techno-useless) paperclipped to it. I was asked to move the paper as it was obscuring our photos and they needed to check it was us. I was wearing mask and sunglasses, Mr Gigit mask and baseball cap. 'Can you actually see my face?' I asked. Just another petty irritation in this never ending covid saga.

They're just trying to do their job - if that's the worst you're dealing with in the world of Covid then things are going pretty well I'd say ;)

Today's announcements do not seem to have much of an impact on zoos. (Was fearing another shutdown) Might have some impact on catering? And close by 10pm. ;)

What irritates me,is the clamour for saving theatres and concert halls. There are plenty of wealthy thespians, patrons of the arts, and wealthy theatre-goers that can step in for that, but there are no (animal) lives at risk, with thos eplaces. We can last without theatres and concert halls for the time being. What with zoo animals, employees, and resources at greater risk, perhaps the funding for theatres can be cut in favour of our beloved collections?

What would you rather hear (or not hear).Theoretically speaking. The Theatre Royal Drury Lane, being closed down,..or London Zoo closing, with some animals at risk of being put down if not found homes.?

To be honest, I find playing different industries off each like this very distasteful. You may be able to last without theatres - but thousands of people's livelihoods depend on them directly. Thousands of often very highly-trained, very skilled people who have put in years of commitment. Same with hospitality, same with travel, same with sport. The situation calls for action across all industries. It's expensive, but inevitable.

Telling thousands of performers, technicians and countless others that they should let their careers and crafts just disappear because no lives depend on them is just unpleasant. Particularly if you're going to frame it in terms of animals being destroyed if they don't give up instead.

We should be fighting tooth and nail for both Regent's Park and Drury Lane.

I can't agree more. I know we all have a passion for animals and zoos on this site but we can never forget or ignore the lives of people in other industries who have and will suffer from this pandemic. Many of which will have been made redundant and no money to pay their way.

This is a battle for every single one of us and our respect should remain equal across the board. Let us not forget that many people working in retail, theatres or hospitality may be thinking why is it right zoos should get any money, I have my family to depend on me, shouldn't zoos be just as prepared as every other business?

I know we love our zoos but sadly there is a lot more at stake here.

Let me clarify. I did not mean to say theatres should be closed indefinitely and that their employees should be thrown to the wind,,but was referring to short term.. Indeed, there are livelihoods at risk within that sector and the arts should be supported, and the arts should be helped out,but but i was trying to say that the voice of support and fears of long term damage due to this pandemic, seems louder in the media than the support or fears for zoo and wildlife collections. Sir David Attenborough, who happens to be a near neighbour of my parents, and Chris Packham, seems to be the only public, famous voice of concerns i have seen/heard,but please correct me on this if i'm wrong

Why should decisions be made on the basis of what "famous" people choose to say?

Our Chief Health Officer, who together with our Premier, face a televised media conference every day, recently said that you are 20 times more likely to catch COVID indoors as out. On that basis zoos, or at least the outdoor parts, should be the last to close.

As an observer from afar it seems the UK government is running their response on the basis of hope, not science.

Well with England going into a 4 week lockdown starting Thursday, do we know if zoos will be affected by this?

As they're part of the leisure industry, which he specifically said would close, I'd imagine so.

Hopefully this period is not too hard on them, a month is a long time but at the very least most zoos seem to have got their summer revenue. Still, worrying times.

He also said you can leave your house for educational purposes, I know they won’t but it would be nice to see the zoos play this card or at least use it against the gov for funding
