Unacceptable North American gorilla facilities

Maybe Snowleopard or another American chatter can elaborate on the situation in the US. How many actual 'working' bachelor groups have you got these days?

@ Pertinax: There are 25 bachelor troops in 20 zoos.

As is the case now with AZA elephant husbandry standards. How do we get them to do the same for gorillas. It was AZA who changed this?

@zooman: The AZA has complied some kind of husbandry and facilites guidelines for nearly every taxa or major species.


There are currently 15 solitary gorilla males in US zoos. 6 of these males are soon to be integrated into a social grouping.
 
@zooman: I deliberately did not include any bachelor groupings of less than 3 gorillas, and I see that okapikpr has helped out with some additional information. Hopefully all of the solitary gorillas can eventually be integrated into groups at various zoos.

Hi and thanks Okapikpr, do you also have a list of where the 15 are and who the 6 are? As this is along the lines of what l am looking for.

@Pertinax: Riverbanks Zoo (3.0), Zoo Granby in Quebec (4.0), Detroit Zoo (3.0), Kansas City (4.0), Knoxville Zoo (3.0), Jacksonville Zoo (3.0) although they have 2 males in one exhibit and 1 in another enclosure, Como Zoo (3.0), St. Louis Zoo (3.0) and Sedgwick County Zoo (8.0) all have nothing but bachelor groups, and there isn't a female gorilla in sight. Add to that the previously mentioned Disney's Animal Kingdom, Zoo Atlanta and Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and that makes 12 North American zoos with bachelor groups of gorillas with a minimum of 3 males.

Buffalo Zoo's exhibit isn't great. They're gorillas are kept inside, their is only one viewing area. their is one climbing structure that you can see at least.
 
Why is Pittsburgh worse than LA? Pitt at least has one mature tree and has more space and less hot wire. Not saying Pitt is good, but other than better visitor viewing, not sure why LA is better.
