Ungulates in UK Collections

Mention is not made of Nile lechwe that are held, I believe, at 4 places: Blair Drummond, Africa Alive! , Folly Farm and Marwell.
Ah, I think I actually bundled the two species of lechwe together..
And looking again, it seems that about 16 or so collections hold both species..!

Speaking of Dorca's Gazelle, it seems that Marwell does keep both sexes - which should mean that unless the single female is to die in the near future, there is still hope for the species' survival in the UK..
Though it would be nice if there were still more gazelle diversity I think

That includes YWP, which I don't think hold any more, Heythrop?
Other 4? Marwell yes, not sure about other 3
I don't know about Heythrop but taking them out if they do, there are only ten left in the UK. Flamingo Land, Africa Alive and Marwell

To be fair, it is relatively difficult to prove or disprove anything directly with Heythrop, as there's rarely any comprehensive listing on the animals they hold - apart from a gallery on the 'Amazing Animals' website which probably hasn't been touched in some time..

Very true, but from a viable population management point of view, I would take it as the ten spread across the three collections. Unfortunately one that is likely to dwindle away with the onset of the Brexit import/export situation and blood line across the ten

The Babirusa is held only in two collections - Chester, and more recently, London
Now this surprised me. I didn't realise babirusa were that uncommon in UK zoos. My nearest large zoo, South Lakes Safari Zoo in Cumbria, used to keep them in the early 2000's, but I don't know how long ago the babirusa left the collection. I visited Chester Zoo last weekend but the babirusa were one of the many, many unfortunate no-shows.

It seems that a number of collections held the species recently - Marwell till 2009, Twycross till 2010, Thrigby till 2013, Dudley till 2015, and the aforementioned South Lakes until 2017.
And also apparently Beale for a short period of time, but not sure when

Again another species that I can see dwindle away. Used to be fairly commonplace around the UK especially at Twycross who bred them like they were going out of fashion. A shame really as quite a charismatic species

Perhaps a somewhat belated entry...
Whilst no UK collection keeps American Mountain Goat today, it was kept in recent history [til 2010] by Colchester.

I have contacted Heythrop, and they have confirmed that the collection no longer contains Addax.
