Zoo Tycoon Unnecessary Zoo Tycoon 2 Animals

How active is the modding community now? It's been many years since I played or downloaded and I was wondering what the status is. Is there a site most people use these days?
They are still a bit active, just this year we got a good Lion Tailed Macaque and Red Legged Seriema

The community has fallen a little less active than usual, chiefly as there aren't a lot of new modders coming in right now, but I would say that it's more a result of the pace of releases slowing than a lack of content being produced outright. The current community hub is still the ZT2 Round Table, which is getting a little quieter, but there's still some activity at ZTV's board on Jcink.

Also for those who play ZT1, there's been a lot of new activity at Zoo Tek Phoenix.

Actually, nowadays it's more or less so that the community that once was present on The Round Table has moved on to a discord server. It's not a entirely Zoo Tycoon 2 focussed server, but it's a fairly active one around the game, and there are still mods being made.

Since they had to reuse so many animal models and animations for Extinct Animals, I think that the extinct “American cheetah” Miracinonyx was a good candidate that they passed up. All they’d have to do would be to reskin the cheetah from the first ZT2 and change the biome from savanna to grassland. I’d take it over the feathered dino thing whose name I can’t spell or pronounce that was just a reskined secretary bird and apparently extremely inaccurate.

The protarchaeopteryx. Yeah, that was a pretty bad one.

If we're gonna talk about reusing animal models, maybe dire wolves would have been cool. Think they could have modeled terror birds after the ostrich or something? I like terror birds. Maybe they could have even modeled some aquatic extinct species after existing aquatic animal models, but since tanks weren't part of the default game, I guess it wouldn't have been feasible.

I completely agree with these. There were so many more possibilities that could've been made from just remodeling animals and just copying behaviors. An example of this is the games use of rhinos. They chose the woolly rhino which is a remodeled white rhino behavior and anatomically speaking. The game could have a lot of more prehistoric, and thus more interesting rhino-like herbivores such as uinatherium, megacerops, toxodon, arsinoitherium, and coryphodon, all having this reused behavior.

On the tank issue, it would be very easy to incorporate. Extinct Animals came out after Marine Mania, so it would be very plausible to have extinct marine fauna. A megalodon or archelon are easy modes to make from the sharks and turtles already in that game.

Yes, but you’d need to have Marine Mania installed, and all of the expansion packs were designed so that you all needed to play them was the base game. However, it’s possible that extinct aquatic animals could have been new animals introduced in the Ultimate Collection, which as its name suggests was a complete compilation.

Hey Guys,

I know this is a little of topic but as this is a pretty active thread i wanted to ask here. Does any of you play zootycoon 2 on a laptop without a disk tray. I got myself a new laptop but more and more do i see them without disk trays. Anybody got any advice?

You can buy an external disk drive that plugs into a USB. Otherwise, the game can be purchased as a download through Amazon.

Thanks man!

Just remembered that the Amazon download doesn't seem to be available outside of the US, at least as far as I've seen. If you do go looking for it, for some reason it doesn't show up when you search for it on the Amazon site, I always have to find it through Google. But anyway, if you can't get ahold of the download, an external disc drive should work, and they don't cost much.

After you put the game on your laptop I would recommend downloading a No CD-hack for the game. This is what I have done. I find it annoying to always have to mess around with the disk drive whenever I want to play.

Here's my take, with some inspiration from @Loxodonta Cobra

ZT2
Replace gemsbok with giant anteater
Replace musk ox with southern pudu or black bear
Replace black leopard with generic leopard or clouded leopard
Add koala, gray wolf, caribou, bison, and Komodo dragon
Honorable mentions: Maybe replace emperor penguin with king penguin

Replace giant sable antelope with giant otter
Replace fennec fox with red-ruffed lemur
Replace gray wolf with dhole

Replace scimitar-horned oryx with Chacoan peccary
Replace Javan rhino with Indian or Sumatran rhino
Replace wolverine with (West African) slender-snouted crocodile
Replace Komodo dragon with gharial

Replace bison with Somali wild ass
Honorable mentions: Maybe replace Florida panther with Key deer, spectacled bear with dog deer

African Adventure
Replace gerenuk with gemsbok
Replace Ethiopian wolf with klipspringer
Replace striped hyena with spotted hyena
Replace Barbary ape with back and white colobus monkey
Replace caracal with serval
Add addax, scimitar-horned oryx, and fennec fox
Honorale mentions: Maybe replace Masai giraffe with foosa

Marine Mania
Replace pilot whale with harbor seal (performs in shows)
Replace false killer whale with dugong
Replace marlin with ocean sunfish
Replace scalloped hammerhead shark with a penguin species (little blue, Humboldt, or African)
Replace goblin shark with giant Pacific octopus

Replace stokesosaurus with coelophysis
Replace cave lion with terror bird
Replace giant warthog with pachycephalosaurus

Replace deodicurus with toxodon
Replace giant camel with plateosaurus
Replace warrah with megalania
Honorable mentions: Maybe replace mastodon with woolly mammoth and Gigantopithecus with gallimimus

I tried to get a Grevy's Zebra mod, but my old computer couldn't install it. That computer is crap. I have Planet Zoo luckily.

How old is the computer? I have a pretty old one that runs mods no problem.
What exactly is going wrong when you're trying to install it?

Agreed. Can’t there instead just be new animals instead of replacing old ones? Like instead of replacing the gerenuk, add the gemsbok.

I like the gerenuk as well. Although the thread is how would you change the original packs, and that is one @Loxodonta Cobra felt should have been shunted. Really it just depends on how you look at the packs and what your favorites are. I basically never use Moose or Gray Wolf, and wouldn't miss them. Same with Goblin Shark in MM.

Although technically with all the mods available nowadays is doesn't particularly matter if you choose to go that route.
