Unpleasant tales from Indonesia

yep its pretty much an accurate assessment of Indonesian zoos. There are only a few that would be classed as even "good". I will say I thought Ragunan Zoo (mentioned in the article) is one of the better ones, but it is so big that I didn't even see all of it. Many of the animals actually had larger enclosures than in Singapore Zoo. But other cages, like for the monkeys and gibbons, were awful. And yes it was grossly overcrowded with visitors and the bulk of them seemed to be there just because it was somewhere to go and have picnics and throw rubbish around.

It really is sad to see how zoos in Third World countries are but you also have to look at how bad the people have it as well. I'm not trying to excuse it, but in general things are not well in places like this.

I often think that one of the priorities Western zoos should have with their overseas work is to help their counterparts in less developed countries. Good zoos in South-East Asia, West Africa and Latin America could do so much to help educate the increasingly urban populations of these areas about their indigenous wildlife.
