Unusual/unique mixed exhibits?

was it Melbourne Zoo that had gorillas in with De Brazzas, and there was an "incident"?

Drills with gorillas sounds a bad idea!

Took me a while to remember the weirdest one I've seen. Gharials with Wattled Cranes in San Antonio.

:) I just came across an article in the Shanghai zoo's magazine, with an exhibit housing 4 racoons, a skunk, a masked palm civet and a hog badger mixed! Would love to see the interactions and how they all get on!

There was an incident which is unfortunate because I loved watching the De Brazzas in that exhibit. Now there are only two and they live in one of the great ape grottoes.

The mix of maned wolves and giant anteaters seems to be a newly popular one. They are mixed in Phoenix, and I can't remember where, but at least one other US zoo.

I've seen Maned Wolves with Anteaters and I think Tapir at Houston. They are now separated.

Here in Mexico city , in the chapultepec zoo there is a walkthrough enclosure with an interesting mix of birds it is called the moctezuma aviary. sounds like a very very overcrowded enclosure , and i should imagine the occupants do not get on too well with one another

the enclosure picyure actually looks pretty big and shows a photo with the skunk and raccoons which dont seem bothered by each other but who knows! :)

didn't colchester zoo try meerkats in with their lions at one point? last time i looked at the enclosure could still see the burrow holes to the right of the exhibit. I'm guessing that one didn't go so well....
on a visit to san diego they ran Allens swamp monkey in with spot necked otter
they also had wolfs guenon in with pygmy hippo and red flanked duiker ; the wolfs guenons looked fantastic on their own to be honest;)

Colchester did try Meerkats with the Lions but I believe things went a bit wrong for the Meerkats, but the male Lion had some fun and a nice snack!!

Thanks again everybody and expecially Chlidonias for his or her extended reflections on the subject of mixed exibits. A most interesting read and some very sensible thoughts, I believe.

But I take it, then, that the mixing of elephants on a big savanna with several other species as it is done in Borås it totally uniqe? It does not exist anywhere else in the zoo world? Neither does the mixture of white rhino with cheetah?

I must say, this only makes me admire this zoo in a small town up here in the north of Europe even more for being so obviously innovative. I will definetly re-visit it some time next year; shame that some 30+ years have passed since the last time I was there...

I am a "his" :)

An interesting one is Cleveland MetroParks Zoo's "Wolf Woods" which mixes beaver/mexican gray wolves

The beavers have access to the pool and a lodge with an underwater tunnel (For escape). The pool edge is slightly raised so the beavers cannot leave the pool and enter the wolf woods (They have there own land area as well)

The wolves can enter the pool, but there are escape chances everywhere for the beavers and the pool is deep enough that they can just swim to the bottom

That certainly sounds interesting but what do you make of it? I would assume that the arrangement works as perfect enrichment for the wolves - having potential prey in their enclosure must be stimulating. But do you think the beavers get stressed by the prescense of the wolves?

The Henry Doorly Zoo has a mountain lion housed directly above the javalinas. The Kingdoms of the Night exhibit has wood ducks in a nocturnal setting and also has raccoons living with young alligators.

Regarding the sea-lions and hippos at Longleat , I am sure I have seen pictures of a sea-lion sat on top of a partially submerged hippo - can anyone confirm this ?
