202-?
Reptile and Amphibian Conservation Centre
- Taronga Zoo (construction's supposed to start in 2022, but haven't seen anything as far as opening date)

According to this article (February 2022), construction was scheduled to begin middle of this year: New residence for reptiles at Taronga Zoo

I’d assume an opening date of mid 2023.

Yeah, I assume the same, just didn't want to say it explicitly 'cause there can always be unexplainable delays

Fair point. Auckland Zoo began construction on their tropical dome in 2020 and it still hasn’t been completed. The glass entrance doors are on now and most of it is fitted out, so I doubt it’ll be much longer. Signage on the building promised August 2022, which is probably a bit optimistic. I’m expecting December 2022. The False gharial still haven’t arrived to my knowledge.

Their entire Indonesian precinct was originally scheduled for completion in 2019! Then we had Covid…

Great! I’ll add them to an updated list once more people have added some more we haven’t listed yet over the coming days.

Good plan. Also just a couple of corrections on dates:

Wellington Zoo have promised us Snow leopards by the end of 2022 (2023 is fine though as these things can take longer).

Orana Wildlife Park are expecting to receive their first batch of Southern white rhinoceros in the expanded facility late 2022 (not 2024).

Yep, especially with the delays and everything I believe Wellington won't be receiving them until at least next year.

That's surprising Orana are importing them at the end of this year! The import has progressed rather quickly. Will the Australian zoos get some at the end of this year too or is this batch primarily for Orana?

The exhibit is progressing nicely. Foundations for the den are being laid and one of the next steps is to install pre-cast mountains, which will add an aspect of architecture to the exhibit. I imagine this exhibit will be something to rival the Snow Leopard Mountain exhibit at Taronga Zoo when completed.

I believe a handful will stay at Orana. At a minimum they need a new breeding bull and would benefit from a couple of cows joining the herd given they only have one viable cow. From here, the bulk will go to Australia, though I’m hopeful Hamilton Zoo will receive a new breeding bull. Kruger isn’t breeding with two of the three cows and is well past his reproductive prime.

That's great news. Do you mean Melbourne's? Taronga had a caged type enclosure, not a mountain.

That sounds very exciting for the future of rhinos within our region. How many rhinos are we expecting, and will they all be arriving at the end of this year?

This importation has been happening since it started 13 years ago the rhinos coming to Australia have to stay in New Zealand for one year

I was referring to the exhibit that opened 1990 at Taronga Zoo. It was referred to as Snow Leopard Mountain.

Orana Wildlife Park will receive 35 rhinoceros in three batches. The facility can accomodate 20, so given then have four females already I assume the first batch will be 15 (with a handful retained). This means they can accomodate a further 10 in the second and third batch (while allowing for breeding).

13 years is quite a long time but i'm glad its finally getting done.

The stay in NZ would be quarantine? I'm assuming Orana's new facility will have the capacity to (temporarily) hold all those rhinos.

Yes, once quarantined they will be transferred to Australia. Orana can only accomodate 20 rhinoceros so the 35 rhinoceros will be transferred in three batches. Factoring in quarantine time, this would likely span 2022-2025.
