Chester Zoo Update from 18/2/10

Forgot to add earlier that Mongoose Mania looks complete but no animals are in as yet.

It seems a little strange to not try and breed from her if she is still fertile, however I'm sure Chester have their reasons for not breeding from her, or/and not confirming a pregnancy from her.

It will be a pity that no sealions are to be at chester, they having had them for so long. However times change I suppose. So now do we atart guessing where the Hunting dogs and Anteaters are going.

It's already been comfirmed that the AWD will have the current przewalski's horse exibit because they are leaving the collection. Anteaters will have the small paddock by the golf that the Rhea and Vicuna currently use. (see photo in the gallery if you are not sure where I mean)

They are currently off-show, pending moving to another collection.
Can you enlighten us as to the reasons why they'll no longer be in the collection? I thought the marmots were hugely popular, provided a boost to the adoption program and were relatively easy to exhibit.

Chester do not seem to worry about moving out popular species these days .

How do we know Giant otters will not be equally as popular as the sea lions? isn't this a good thing that the zoo are moving out of relatively common (although popular) species and aiming to eplace them with more ednagered alternatives. If we can make the nimba otter shrew* as popular as priare dogs then surely there will be a push for conservation of these species. Now I'm not saying that the otters WILL be as popular but if they do turn out to be (who knows) then surely it will be a massive sucess?

I Like sea lions, their grace and beauty, but frankly I've seen quite a few and I haven't seen a single Giant otter, I dont think most of my friends know Giant otter even exist (Im sure if i asked them they would conjure images of otters 6ft tall :D ) however I would say most of my friends do know about sea lions.

* I needed a weird obscure species and this popped into my head

Giant Otters may not be 6ft tall , but they are 6ft long and very impressive animals . Provided Chester's pair are not shy and retiring , which the species does not seem to be generally , they should make a very good exhibit .

I think that's the issue. Chester has lots of fascinating and rare exhibits, but beautiful as they may be, there probably isn't ever going to be a throng of people ten deep around the nimba otter shrews at feeding time.

While I totally agree that endangered rare species should be on top of the agenda, zoos need ABC species to get the public through the gate. The lions, tigers, elephants, sea lions, camels and giraffes are what the majority of visitors come to see, and they in turn support the conservation of the supporting players.

The thing is, I see sealions at every zoo I visit. I would rather see great Sea Lion exhibits at a handful of zoos instead of an average exhibit at every zoo. I think it's a good move.

A travel crate has appeared outside the Indian Rhino house. I assume this is the one that they will move Batschii to Madrid in.

When will she be transferred to Madrid? Is that confirmed by zoo officials?

Chester have comfirmed this via Facebook although they said she wasn't going until late spring so this is a bit sudden. Hopefully they won't be without an Indian Rhino for long.

The moves have been arranged in such a way that there will always be at least one Indian Rhino at Chester, so no worry there!

Simple answer no because I don`t know.

So Babuu will be moved down from Edinburgh before Batschii goes?
