Good news that another UK collection is to exhibit white-lipped peccary .

according to ISIS there is no white-lipped peccaries in the UK  ah well but its not reliable

does cotswolt still have some?? if so its that species.

Evil Kitty,
where are the peccaries being housed?
I saw the bird of prey show in the castle in April, 4 birds were involved , but I think they are trying to train more.
I was told that Jill (the raven) was going to be part of the show, I hope so as she's lovely, she always seems to want to talk to me when I visit, and I stand in front of her pen for ages talking back to her (not while other people are around though!)

Good to see the white lipped peccaries back at Dudley, the first zoo in Britain to breed them.

that is good to here!

they have currently 7 training birds

the peccaries are held where the alpacas are, but they are in the concrete part since their enclosure is being redone. Not a good mix, not bright people+ peccaries :DD

Dudley's otters are called Jack, Jet and Sky. They have a new male snow leapord from Cologne but couldn't see the female!

There seems to have been a birth explsosion in the reindeer pen, they've had 5 babies in the past two months, and they do look really cute at that age.

I visited on Friday and the peccaries have settled in well, they were all rooting in the earth digging it up.

I like the viewing points in the new African hunting dogs enclosure, but as it was hot they were just doing alot of sleeping.

I'm still not sure about the new lion enclosure, sure it's big, but it lacks some bushes maybe, and there isn't really a good viewing point for visitors if the lions are sleeping (ain't they awlays) in the middle of the enclosure or under the tecton building (old bird avery).

An idea for the giraffes, when and if the chimps do move (?), I think it would be a great idea to put the giraffes in the chimp enclosure as it's very spacious and grassy and they could also make an African area with other animals in there as well (perhaps zebra, gnu etc), it would need the indoor housing re-doing, but as the chimp house is tall and big I'm sure it could be done.
What do others think of this idea?

Pertinax,
Direct quote from Dudley ZooNooz,
'The breakdown in the negotiations over a £100m regeneration project for Castle Hill has heralded a new era for DZG.... The scheme included a £10m package for the zoo dependent on the sale of land at the 40 acre tourist site'.

Now to me this tells me that the land sale idea is NOT going to happen so the chimp area will remain in the zoo grounds.
If anyone knows any different then I'd be pleased to hear, but as it stands my giraffe idea seems a good use of this land.

I find the lion enclosure is very nice, until it gets a visit from the strimmer!

Sure it's nice, and it's big, but do you think it could do with more planting?
Even something like elderberry buhes which will grow fast but not too thick and are easily trimmed will give the enclosure a better look, just an idea...

.

It does seem to indicate that. But if so, there may be no reason to move the chimps and presumably they will stay where they are?

And what are the implications for the Zoo generally from this I wonder?

From what I can gather from ZooNooz the zoo are having a 5 year programme of new enclosures and improvements, some of which have already happened (Lynx house, Lion enclosure, Hunting Dogs enclosure upgrade).
It does say new Chimp house (planning permission granted Jan 09), so that looks sure to go ahead.
'Refurishment of 12 listed Tecton buildings' looks like it could be interesting as that is sure to include the Orang and old Polar bear areas.

I don't think the zoo is in such a bad financial position as before, visitor numbers do seem to be up and staying up, so the outlook does seem to be brigher than before.
