ZSL Whipsnade Zoo update on whipsnade asian elephants

As far as I know they still only have the male and two females. In the photo taken in September, which I posted on the gallery you may be able to see the new building which is under construction behind the paddocks. This is to accomodate several more (10?) animals but I don't know anything more as yet. Their plans for a huge new building and centre to accomodate a very large herd (up to 20), did not come to anything due to not getting the funding.

Almost nearly but not quite it was due to the fact it was going to be built by a charity and if they sold the park it would make the sale very difficult as a result.
 
Well building a new barn with space for up to 10 elephants is certainly a huge improvement so I am not too dissapointed that the "big" plans didn`t come true. If they add spacious outdoor enclosures and if the bull starts breeding soon, they will have a great herd in a great facility!
 
He has already started breeding, altho I think one of the babies (Aneena?) died at the age of 3 from some type of virus.
 
Ups this is a misunderstanding, I was talking about Woburn and not Whipsnade (whose bull Emmet is a breeding bull, unlike Raja in Woburn).
 
Glad to hear its now complete but what about the other elephants they wanted to have any news on them, do you think they will import more or bring a few in from other uk zoos?.
 
What about the four females at the Twycross zoo going to waste, I think two of them are proven breeders, they have no bull of their own

The new building is siuated on the top of a low rise. There is plenty of scope to have large paddocks leading out from it in the surrounding parkland. It should be a good display when completed. Their bull is relatively small (smaller than Whipsnade's) and I don't know if he mates the females.

As far as stocking with new Elephants goes, there is no news yet. I'm sure though that the Twycross females will not go there.
 
I doubt it Mark though I suppose they could send two and keep two on exhibit themselves. I just can't see it happening somehow.

I heard a brief rumour somewhere on this forum about Twycross now possibly considering getting a bull- but I don't know if there is any truth in that- our Twycross correspondents seem to have been very quiet of late...:confused:
 
It has been rumoured about Twycross getting a bull but at the moment that is all it is,at the moment they seem to be going doing the I.A route with them.
 
Just some questions, that i guess goes here...

When did Whipsnade get rid of their pygmy hippos? Where did they go to? and what reason was given for their departure?
 
Pygmy Hippos- don't know, don't know and... don't know- but they weren't there in September- the paddocks were empty.:(
 
Do they not have them any more? I've never actually seen them, but the signs and that were still up last time I went.
 
I've only asked because I was looking at some photos i took in 2006 of the pygmy hippos then i checked ISIS and they have been removed...
