ZSL Whipsnade Zoo update on whipsnade asian elephants

Do they not have them any more? I've never actually seen them, but the signs and that were still up last time I went.

The Pygmy hippo enclosures were definately empty in September. The common hippos are still there.

The new baby Asian elephant calf born at Whipsnade 0n the 18/1/08 is very good news for them, hope all goes well.

Fantastic news! That's 3 youngsters in the current group for them then now, if all goes well...

What sex is it?

So what is the current size of the group? Another birth to the UK's population is great news

ISIS lists 2.6 but this is before the new birth, so the total number is 9.

Also, perhaps this thread should be renamed 'updates on whipsnade' since we don't have a proper whipsnade thread...

Good idea Jimmy, now if they bring in one or two cows from Trycross maybe a few more calfs?

Mark. Don't forget there is one Twycross female(one of the two born there) already at Whipsnade, though she was sent there because she was causing trouble in the Twycross group, rather than as a deliberate effort to breed from her. I think she may have moved to Whipsnade permanently but I still doubt (unfortunately) any of the others from Twycross will join her.

I think he must have seen it on the 'Asian elephant.net' website. I looked at it and found it on there. It definately hasn't been posted on the Whipsnade website yet and there's no other news elsewhere of it.

Azeeza is also the mother of the 2004 bull calf 'Euan' so he now has a younger brother..

It is good news. They now have the bull, five cows(including the Twycross-born one) and three calves(2.1) The only thing is the cows are normally kept seperate in two groups(2 & 3) rather than a single herd, and the bull too is nearly always alone too- so its not a single cohesive herd. Also, two of the (original) cows have not bred at all so far and it seems rather unlikely for them to start now.... Still, that's not to detract from this success.

thats true the last 4 claves have both been from aziazh and kaylee not from anyone eles - in the furture i think they may breed form karishma if she still there and there might be a chance of luka getting pregnant . When i went in the summer a keeper said there was plans to get a new female - has this fallend trough or putt of - and i have a theory that kaylee might be pregnat again or luka .........

also he weight at birth is 103 kgs ! and what are the herds they keep their elphants in ? and what happend to elephant dilberta

Do you know why?

Pertinax do you know which elephants are usually together?

The two mothers (Kaylee and Aziza) do not live together. Each lives with another female(s)

Aziza(the mother of Eauan & this latest calf) was with Karishma(ex Twycross) and another female.
Kaylee (and her female calf) was with the last female (in a totally seperate paddock out of sight...). Sorry I can't remember which of the two unnamed females lives with each mother.... I think its unlikely the two non-breeders will breed in future, why should they start after all this time? (i believe they don't cycle) whereas Karishma, the Twycross-born female, should certainly breed. She has already been in with the bull okay.
