Marwell Wildlife Updates

When you say for years how far are you going back ? Howletts had pools for there tapir,s in the earley to mid 80,s !

I don't remember these. The current pools at Howletts, located towards the front of the paddocks, were added only around 10 years ago.

Not sure where the Tapir,s are housed now but used to be housed on the left as you came up the slope from the Bull elephant house just past what was the Bongo house, there where 3 paddocks, the first paddock the pool was at the back of the paddock but the next 2 where near to the front and could be seen, i am going back to mid to late 80,s when i was a keeper there on the ungalate section.Last time i visted was around late 90,s earley 2000, and they were still in the same position,s.

Does it matter to the hippos or tapirs if the pools are indoors or outdoors? The important thing is that the animals have pools; the benefit of indoor pools is that they can be heated. The opportunity to graze in the outdoor paddocks is more beneficial to the hippos; it is surprising how many collections keep pigmy hippos without any access to vegetation. And there are trees in the enclosures although they will be more beneficial when they have matured.

I think its better for the animals inside as if in winter periods there pool freezes then at least they have an indoor area with a pool.

Tapir,s and there pools..

Jordan i would say it,s only been in the last 20 yrs or so that that zoological collections, have had indoor pools, i know acouple before that time did. At Marwell and Howletts and Port Lympne, come the winter months no more pools they where clean and laid empty to the following spring. To be honest the tapir,s main activitey is to use it as toliet.

I was talking to a colleague at work today-she told me she went to Marwell over the bank holiday weekend, knowing I live not far away.

"Oh", I said, "did you enjoy it?"

"Overpriced and half-empty" she said.

It's a shame the management at Marwell won't read this because one bit of negative PR is 10 times worse than 1 positive piece-she only has to tell other mothers she knows-and it puts people off.

Then the park don't get the money they want.

Stop building expensive unnecessary buildings to flog cheap plastic tat AND GET SOME NEW ANIMALS IN!!!!!!

I wouldn`t be so sure about the mangement at Marwell not reading this if they are anything like the management at Chester,Colchester,Twycross,Belfast and Cotswold Wildlife Park and many other collections in the UK they will be well aware of what is being said about them on HERE!!!

Updates from visit 08/05/11

Some notes from today's visit to Marwell:

1) Several Humboldt penguin chicks have hatched in recent weeks
2) The Nile monitor vivarium was empty due to refurbishment
3) The Amur leopards have swapped enclosures again
4) It looks like trees have been felled in preparation for construction of the new meerkat enclosure
5) A Przewalski's horse foal has been born in the last week and is very cute
6) The camels have moved back into the enclosure with the Przewalski's horses (presumably for the summer months)
7) I was told that coati kits have recently been born, but they have not ventured out yet
8) Egyptian tortoises are now in the vivarium in Cold Blooded Corner which previously housed the Kimberley rock monitor
9) The extension built onto the Sulawesi crested macaque house is now accessible to the public, but it is bare inside (apart from a wall heater)
10) Since the otters have moved back into the Life in the Trees exhibit, the fossas have had that end part of their enclosure opened to them, so they now have the whole length of the exhibit
11) The douroucoulis were outside, which is usually a rare sight during opening times

The information board has not been updated recently, so I cannot advise any further births or arrivals.

Nothing to do with the animals, but a serious aspect of welcoming visitors back at Marwell is the main cafe.

The hot food at cafe Graze is just terrible. Overpriced, lukewarm, soggy chips, re-heated fish. The worst food at any attraction I go to. I take guests to Marwell for photographic mentoring and strongly advise them to take a sandwich for our break! The management at Marwell should be ashamed and embarrassed at what they offer their visitors,

Food is easily the low point of any visit to Marwell, it can be done properly, I know Colchester zoo does a good job.

Marwell Cafe

Being a visitor to various Zoological and animal
collections around the country, i have found most if not over priced.

Overpriced is one thing, but to then get such rubbish makes you feel like you've been gastronomically mugged!

In my 30, yrs of working in zoological collections and Farm Parks,i have yet to visit a collection where food or drinks are a fair price for what is offered, at the end of the day it is a captive markrt, unless you take your own food !. All visitor attractions, have high prices for food, its the smaller collections where home cooking is offered, where value for money is.

We should all collectively complain more then. A captive audience is no excuse to provide poor quality food!
