Monterey Bay Aquarium Vampire Squid on exhibit at Monterey Bay Aquarium!

Wow; definitely a "hurry to see these" species.

now I know how regular people feel when some zoo gets meerkats.....!

I'm almost tempted to spend every last penny myself and Hel have just to see these; not for the lifetick, but for your reaction ;)

Almost.

Oh My God!! This is so awesome!! I couldn't be more excited if they were goblin sharks!!

Seriously, zooboy28 -- you still aren't going to put Monterey Bay on your itinerary?!!

How long will it take you to get up to Monterey Bay, David Brown?

It looks like the soonest that I can get up there is in a month or so:(

Hopefully it will live long and prosper, for a few months at least and preferably for a long and happy vampire squid life.

Well, now. This is certainly surprising! Just when I was about to give up on the aquarium featuring something "cool" now that they've abandoned the great white shark program.

I know where I'm going next weekend!

How do they keep them alive? Do they need some kind of special pressurized tank or is it not a problem for them? I remember watching a documentary where a research team brought some kind of deep sea dandelion to the surface and it only lasted a hour before it fell apart.

I wish I wasn't stuck in New England trying to get a business going so I could go see this.

I believe the captive lifespan record is two months, and that the main issue with their survival is damage sustained upon capture.
