Often at night (within .5-1 hour before closing) the crowds thin out quite noticeably and you can usually manage to get a porpoise or dolphin to come down to the underwater viewing and interact with you !

I'm not sure I'll be able to stay the whole day, there is lots that I want to see in Vancouver! Are you able to get a pass-out or something similar that lets you come back in on the same day? Are there any shows I should see?
 
What else are you planning on doing in Vancouver Zooboy28?

I would suggest a whale watching tour. My family was out ther about 15 years ago and we went whale watching on a big boat (I get sea sick). It was by far the best thing we did that trip. We saw seals, sea lions, I think a sea otter, and a big pod of orcas. We saw a bunch of the cool orca moves. The best thing, and it was just dumb luck but four or five whales, including a small calf, dove right under our boat. They started to dive one on side and then on the other we could still see their white patches as they swam away. Even hopped up on gravol it was so amazing it was burned into my mind. It was a great day that I remember absolutely nothing about.

I am doing a whale watching tour out of Seattle, so should hopefully see some seals/sea lions and whales, and hopefully some birds as well.

We don't have much planned in Vancouver yet, apart from the aquarium We have three days there, and want to have a good look around the city, and hopefully go up Grouse Mountain for the views and to see the bears there. I'm not sure what else there is to do, I haven't read about it much (our guide book is just for USA, not Canada). A wildlife-watching tour wold be good, but I haven't looked into that yet.

We also went to Victoria taking the ferry. Didnt see much on the trip over or back but we went to Buschard Gardens... I was bored out of my mind looking at all the flowers but my mother enjoyed it a lot.

There is Greater Vancouver Zoo. Didnt go there but taking a look at it on google streetview proved unimpressive.

A simple drive into the mountains is nice. We actually flew into Calgary and drove through the mountains into BC. It was cool going from flat land to mountains. We did tons more things in Alberta than BC, not sure why.
 
I bet, she has a lot of expericnes with cetaceens in"captivity".Don't bite the hand feed you...she got so much money from zoos around the world for "their"chimpanzees, so thatfor, zoos are good enough for Goodall.....
 
really who cares what Jane Goodall thinks about whales in captivity? She is as entitled to her opinion as anyone else, but just because she's a "famous scientist" doesn't mean squat if it is outside her field of knowledge. I mean, she believes in Bigfoot -- that doesn't mean Bigfoot exists!

I agree with you both just because you are an expert in one field doesnt mean you should be throwing your weight around in others. And the guy in the article even said he doesnt believe shes ever even been to the aquarium. Its hardly fair to criticize a place without having experienced it yourself. Not impossible but we are talking about the very well respected Vancouver Aquarium here not some rinky dink facility. They are world leaders in various fields.

It also says she doesnt believe in elephants or primates in captivity. How does she think research gets funded? People see these animals at zoos and fall in love and want to help protect them in the wild. Would as much money be raised without people being exposed to animals at zoos and aquariums? Nope. Not a chance. There would be some money but not to the extent it is.
 
I agree with you both-altogh she don't like Zoos, she visited many of them, even she has opene dnew exhibits for chimpanzees, and she kept in many zoos well paid lectures- and has a lot of donated money there, "collected" as I said before, zoos for Goodall are good enough for collecting money, but in captivity she don't want the animals seen-except for the fact-with antelopes, zebras and big cats in zoos, she has probably no problems-Sorry, if I must say so, but whether Fossey, Goodall and Galdikas, who ape-ladies all in some way, hmm, how shall I put it that way? You know what I mean-strange in many ways. ... Anyway, although I do not know Goodall personally, she is me, because of their statements and views rather, not really symphatic...

She needs to stick to chimps.

Incidentally someone left a comment claiming that Naomi Rose and Lori Marino are unbiased scientists who have "proven" that cetaceans can't be kept in captivity. I know who pays their salaries and/or what their extracurricular activities are and I feel that the suggestion that they are unbiased and scientific could not be further from the truth.
 
Thank you so much for posting this very well argued statement by Kristyn Plancarte. It's fanatastic when pros come out swinging with well articulated arguments to defend themselves and their work from unfair attacks. You should add it to the general thread on whales and dolphins in captivity.

In regards to your second comment... Everyone has biases. And your right the scientists would have to be examined long and hard to make that kind of claim. Everyone has some kind of motivation for what they do.
