Virginia Zoo Virginia Zoo news

I've been waiting over a year for this exhibit! My "see a binturong" will have to go on my 2014 Zoo Years Resolutions list as I did not complete it this year.

I also saw on their facebook that the red panda cubs moved to the older exhibit in the center of the zoo. They will reside with Missy, the senior female. Oscar and Bernadette will continue to be on exhibit in Trail of the Tiger.

The zoo has welcomed two young orangs, 10 year old male Solaris and 14 year old female Dara. They will be the orangs most often on display outside as the zoos 30 year old orangs Schnitz and Pepper don't seem to enjoy their outdoor habitiat. The new arrivals are breeding age so there could be a baby in the future.

I am so glad Dara can enjoy the outdoors with grass. A big upgrade from her previous exhibit!

The three cassowary chicks and one of their parents have died of Eastern Equine Encephalitis. EEE has never been reported in cassowaries before now and the horse version of the vaccine has been used on the rest of the cassowaries to hopefully protect them.

From the zoo's Facebook:
"Meet Dash, our new yellow-backed duiker! Dash will eventually be on exhibit in the giraffe yard along with our female duiker Dot. Dash and Dot have been slowly getting to know each other as he settles into his new home. For now, visitors can catch a glimpse of Dash from the giraffe viewing area on the boardwalk in Africa."

I feel like the viewing of the duikers would be lost in the giraffe exhibit where you're looking down into it. I hope they keep the grass low enough!

EDIT: Well they do look taller than I imagined.

On October 21st, a night monkey was born to Charlotte and Gorse. The baby is on display in the Exhibit Building.
