Virus threatens endangered bunnies in North America

A worldwide pandemic is killing both wild and domestic rabbits. The virus is not related to COVID-19, nor is it transmissible to humans.

The virus is spreading across the southwestern United States, and scientists are concerned that it could seriously harm endangered rabbit species.

Could be catastrophic for the volcano rabbit if it is spread South of the border and reaches Central Mexico.

Yeah that would be very catosrophic! What precautions do you see Mexican authorities taking on that if any? What would you recommend they do? @carlos55 do you have further thoughts on this matter?

In terms of Mexican authorities sadly not very much (Just look at the vaquita , Mexican wolf , axolotl for example).. but in terms of Mexican conservationists quite a lot would be done and achieved in fighting to save the volcano rabbit.

The people I know who are actively involved in the ex-situ conservation of the teporingo at Chapultepec would take any action needed to protect the species should this virus reach Central Mexico. I have absolutely no doubt about that as they are professionals who are totally dedicated to conserving native / endemic species.
