Chester Zoo Visit 24th December

Has anybody checked the Okapi in the last few weeks??? Maybe there has been the pitter patter of tiny hoofs :p

Is it actually an ABC species or is that just an assumption that has collectively been made?

Perhaps it is something a bit left-field from one of the zoo's rarer, but less popular species?

I would be very surprised there, considering the gestation period and when Stuma was last in season.

Kulan-I wasn't aware Whipsnade had bred a female. A young male was born about two years back when they just had one pair, and he is now segregated from the group. The two other newer females seem to have arrived together from somewhere.
Okay I may have got the wrong end of the stick with her but she definately came from Whipsnade.

I am not getting into the speculation game , but I am sure that Orangs of Martha's age have bred in other collections , not as if she is a first-time breeder either .

Visited again today and noticed the female Wrinklled Hornbill is re-sealing herself back into the nest, also a Red and Yellow Barbet is in one of the upper Aviarys of the Tropical Realm. The Pied Tamarins enclosure is empty.

We were also there today. I'm uploading some photos from the Tropical House today, inc some of the Wrinkled Hornbills including the chick. They're not sure why the female is back on the nest. Current theories are a) she's preparing a second clutch, or b) she's got used to being waited on and is too lazy to come out ;)

At the end of the day, it's wrong for forumers to semi-announce a birth, then not officially announce it. If you can't announce anything, then why speculate, as it only gets the forum naming every species in the zoo that might have had a possible birth. For all we know it might be something non significant as a bird species hatched or a small mammal.

In zoogiraffe's defence, he's not the one speculating, and a forum announcement is never going to be 'official'.

And don't assume a bird hatching or small mammal breeding would be insignificant. There are plenty of species of bird at Chester that a succesful breeding would be far more 'significant' (as in rare or notable) than a lion or tiger birth! (Not least the Wrinked Hornbills!)

Yeah, but it's quite frustrating 'There has been a significant birth at Chester.... but I can't tell you what it is'. Some bird or small mammals may be significant at Chester but I would hate to get my hopes up at it being an elephant/lion/tiger or whatever, and it turns out to be a penguin!

At the end of the day, if you can't say what it is, why post it?

It will give you something to think about and maybe try to find if you were to go and visit.

I quite like mysteries.

In hindsight I should probably have PM'd Zoogiraffe to discuss said birth, but we all make mistakes. I apologise for any upset/frustration etc caused.
