Visited the zoo today, here is a 'brief' review.

Arrived at about 10:10am, and headed straight for RORA. It was very quiet. We saw all four gibbons, but only three orangutans showed themselves (all SUmatrans). Of the three, one was sleeping under a sack, while Padang was hanging upside down, much to Budi's amusement. All the reptiles and insects were active, but we didn't spot the otters outside. Both Babirusa could be seen.

We visited Tropical Realm (Entering through the exit), and saw the baby Buffy-Headed capuchin. We were watching them, when seemingly out of nowhere, a capuchins jumped on to the window we were watching through. Several more joined it, and we got a good view of the baby on mum's back. There are changes in the reptile exhibits, Utila Iguanas have arrived (I think), and the Desert Chameleon has moved in with the Egyptian Tortoises and Sudanese Spiny-Tailed Lizards. It's previous exhibit is now occupied by Fiji Banded Iguanas.

Those are main stories of the day. Ask any questions you like.

I voted for Bella. Anyone remember Bella the Bornean Orang Utan born in 1980 and named after education officer Bella Neate, she was a former ape keeper?

I visited on the 1st, Tuesday and I saw Bella and she looked adorable! Very good condition too!

was there any sign of construction or new exhibits being started on? i should think with the summer season coming to an end chester will start to begin work getting ready for some of the new additions coming in 2010...i'm thinking of the hunting dogs...do we know where they will be going into yet?

What area is that?

The Otter enclosure had been demolished, and they are building something there.

I think I have a logical answer to the location of the wild dogs...

would they be going in the Przewalski horse paddock (well that general area anyway)? The entire paddocked section of the zoo has taken on an African appearance and i think the only non-african animals in the paddocks are the horses and the emus (if they're still there).

I think i has been mentioned that any future savannah zone will be in that location, so a phasing out of the horses (or moving them elsewhere within the zoo) allows the for announced arrival of hunting dogs into that area

I hope they keep the horses!
No horse`s are going should be gone before the end of the year if what i`ve heard is correct, then work will start on the Hunting Dog enclosure.I think you will find the old Otter enclosure area will either become another lawn or an extension of the beer garden.

Haz_cat you have quoted the answer in your post. Zoogiraffe says they are going. It's a shame but that's what is happening. I heard the old otter/aviary site is to become a lawn.

I was hoping they would go in Asian Plains or with the camels. Oh well, with the Natural Vision, and the horses being critically endangered, this may not be the last we see of them...

It is a pity but it will make this part of the zoo an African Savannah Zone so we could see some other species brought in to improve the area even more.

was there not some talk of a chinese aviary on the old otter enclosure or is that no longer?
