Chester Zoo Visits Autumn

Visited Today! Hooray!:D

Notes

Saw about 6 elephants in the paddock today including baby Nayan. didn't see Upali althougth there was a cow in the bull pen.

Blackbuck and brow-antlered deer where on the muddy yard area next to the main bridge. No sign of an Indian Rhino.

Butterfly house is a really good exhibit. One of the highights.

Saw the Anteater! Didn't manage to get a photo though.

Both Okapi's were out and active. Counted 7 giraffes. Largest the herd has been for a while. All 7 congo buffalo where on their yard.

Only saw 3 Red river hogs today.

Loads of Roul roul partridges in the tropical realm. Didn't realise they had so many. All the hornbills where very showy today. Saw one great indian in the elephant house, a pair in the tropical realm and another single specimin in between the writhed and the wrinkleds. No sign of the Philippine crocodiles. Liked the frog exhibits although I miss all the reptiles like the anacondas and chameleons. All the capuchins were out on the island.

Saw no jaguars inside. Really impressed with the amphibian exhibit in SOTJ. Didn't see the emerald boa. Must of missed it. Saw a pair of Jaguars outside in the waterfall enclosure.

Saw a mother and baby Bornean Orang-utan inside RORA. Saw all Sumatrans outside with the gibbons and OTTERS! Didn't know otters had access to their enclosure. There were two otters with the babirusa aswell.

Spent ages with the chimps in their inside enclosure. There was a very young one being carried around by what looked like an older sibling or cousin. Two large males then decided to head outside and the whole troop followed after.

No sign of the Giant otters which was a shame. Their enclosure looks really nice.

Managed to spot one tiger alseep on the platform. Have never seen two together.

Couldn't see any Dwarf mongooses.

Saw both lions on their platform. Also saw 3 cheetahs together in the enclosure nearest to the camels. They were pacing at the gate waiting to be fed I think.

No sign of the Anoa but saw 3 female Philippine spotted deer. No sign of the Visayan warty pigs next to the bats. Saw a sow and 3 piglets in the enclosure near to the giraffes.

Saw 2 tapirs. They were being kept on the yard. Only saw 1 capybara which was on the paddock. Counted 6 Vicuna and 4 rhea. Saw 1 spectacled bear but no sign of coati.

The scimitar-horned oryx herd were on the sand yard. Didn't see any zebra. Gemsbok herd still out on grass. Sitatunga look to have had a successful year. No sign of Roan antelope. Saw 5 or 6 lechwe females.

No access on the old przewalski's horse path. Work has started on African wild dog enclosure.

Saw warthogs and mongoose being fed. Hadn't seen them very much before.

Saw 1 black-tailed marmoset inside.

All in all a good day!:D

7 Giraffes?!

I can only think of: Thorn, Bella, Kelly, Aoife, Orla and the young female that arrived from Hannover?? (Her name slips my tongue) So thats only 6? Have I missed one?

EDIT: Just remembered, the female from Hannover, Faida... How could I forget! :D

Must have miss counted . They kept moving in and out the house. Next time someone goes, count em and we'll see.:D

Not actually any news, but couldn't think where else to mention this:

Somebody on South Lakes facebook page thinks Chester Zoo is a 'concrete jungle.' I'm just struggling to think of what parts of Chester can be described by this?

Could it be the bear pit that they confine their spectacled bears to, or the iron bar cage that there jaguars call home? I suppose the most likely candidate is their tired, run-down orang-utan facilities, where not one of the orangs has a healthy coat of hair *caugh* Puluh *caugh*. ;) Honestly, some people .

I think that their comment would be based on the zoo as a whole rather than a particular exhibit. Whilst I don't agree I can see where they are coming from. Chester has fully concreted paths and lots of buildings, some other zoos tend to go for more open spaces, and less formal gravel/chip paths.

It's just a matter of personal taste and I don't mind either approach.

OK slightly off topic but it won't be if I'm successful - has anyone had problems with Chester online shop - I'm trying to do an annual membership and getting nowhere.

The female Warty Pig in the enclosure by the bats has recently given birth to four new piglets. The female from the last litter is seperated off from them now

Hello All,

I decided to visit the zoo today, a few highlights of the day are as follows:

- I saw two of the Warty Pig piglets that Nisha reported on earlier in the week.

- A male Pudu has been moved to the smaller enclosure beside the Warty Pigs in the Cattle House. (Pictures will soon follow) The chap spent the whole day sitting by the fence, excellent for taking photos! ;)

- The corner enclosure in the Tropical Realm (near the Caiman Lizards) seems to be finished, at long last... Now to see what will be kept there. A great amount of vegetatian seems to have been cut back also in the Tropical Realm, the Roul Roul group seems to be around 15 to 20 individuals!

- The Rodent enclosures in the Okapi house all seem to have had a refurb. The group of 6 Giraffe seemed fine, Aoife is now VERY LARGE!

- A fence has been erected in the Indian One Horned Rhino Paddock. As Lechweoryx reported, the Blackbuck/Brow Antlered Deer are being kept on the Yard by the bridge, the fence prevents them from being on the grass paddock.

- A plan of the African Hunting Dog enclosure has been added to the fences around the proposed enclosure! Plans include a bridge, a moat, many walkways and a Porcupine enclosure. (The Porcupine enclosure being near the Zebra/Sitatunga) Pictures will follow, although they may not be of the best quality!

I think thats about it! :D Ahh yes, another highlight of the day was seeing a group of Field Mice in the Parrot enclosure! (Beside the Bongo enclosure)

Nice, I assume the pudu is a temporary thing? Any idea on why it is there, and how long it should be there for. Can't make my next trip untol the 3rd December, and I'd love to get some good photos (its practically impossible across the canal).

Also visited today, nothing much to add really. Still no sign of the baby Tapir though the female is still nesting. Aoife is certainly very large so hopefully won't be too long before another baby giraffe arrives. For any of your football fans John Barnes was at the zoo today with his family.

Forgot to mention the other day that I was at the zoo twice last week and didn't see Padang (Sumatran Orang) on either occassion so I'm assuming that he has now departed for Prague or is off show in preparation to go very soon

Padang arrived in Prague on Thursday (28th) - here is a movie of his arrival

Padang arrives!

Great, I'd love to see these guys a little more often and this is a great opportunity. I'm guessing this is the young male born earlier in the year?

Has anybody saw Baabu lately? Not saw him on the last few visits.

I briefly saw him last Tuesday. He's now confined to the Rhino's winter paddock. Hopefully his American girlfreind will be over here shortly and he will be out with her in the Spring :D
