An updated list of closed UK animal collections that I've visited:-
  • Cliftonville Aquarium and Mini-Zoo
  • Cricket St. Thomas
  • Gatwick Zoo
  • Glasgow Zoo
  • Ilfracombe Zoo
  • Kilverstone
  • Leeds Castle Aviaries
  • Living Coasts
  • Margate Dolphinarium
  • Margate (Dreamland)
  • Merley Bird Gardens
  • Mole Hall
  • Olney
  • Palm Bay Aquarium (near Margate)
  • Peakirk (Wildfowl Trust)
  • Poole Aquarium & Serpentarium
  • Poole Park Zoo
  • Ramsgate
  • Rare Species Conservation Centre
  • Robin Hill (Isle of Wight)
  • Rode Bird Gardens
  • Southampton Zoo
  • Southend Aquarium (not the SeaLife Centre)
  • Southend (Peter Pan’s Playground)
  • Stagsden Bird Gardens
  • Tenby Zoo (St. Catherine’s Island)
  • Ventura
  • Windsor Safari Park
Of these, I consider Kilverstone and the Rare Species Conservation Centre very great losses; I miss both enormously.

And how sad it will be to add Bristol Zoo to this list.in the near future.

Incidentally I very much regret that I never visited Belle Vue (Manchester) before it closed.

What was at Westbury on Trim? Was it the W o T in Bristol and what was there?

I don’t remember much about it; yes it was the Bristol WoT, and it was a small British/European collection. I do have a recollection of trying to revisit it but being unable to, which suggests it was reasonable in that I wished to go back. No other details I am afraid. Also mentioned by Pertinax on page 1 of the thread...

Out of them all that is the one I'm most pleased to have visited, several times in fact and can still remember parts of it quite well. A major urban zoo and collection compared to a lot of the other closed ones.

The only thing I can remember clearly from Westbury on Trim was a tame three-legged Red Deer hind that had been damaged in a threshing accident as a calf. There's at least one multi-postcard from Westbury that should show a few of the species they had but yes it was British/European mainly.
